Yeah that guy Eric Johnson (who would fit into group A) has horrible tone. I can't believe he even comes out to play he sounds so bad. I would actually put EJ in group B. I think he has great feel and TASTE! While we're talking about tone...I am listening to Robin Trower Live in Stockholm 1975 and holy god that is some beautiful tone!!! I mean that is some of the best blues/rock tone I have ever heard! I have heard people talk about specific live albums for holy grail of tone (ie. Allmans Live at Fillmore, Hendrix BOG, The Who Live at Leeds) but I think this tone kills all of them! His playing is pretty good too Robin played 4-input Marshalls with fuzzface, wah, univibe in front...greenback cabs...

I've never heard a Marshall sound so smooth and toneful. I wonder what kind of pickups he had then.

Eric Johnson fits the mold for both groups. Listen to cliffs of Dover, Camel's night out, Righteous, Zap, etc. etc. That's shredding. Manhattan, Trademark, 40 mile town is definitely laid back more feel music. Oh my goodness have we found a subject that we agree on???

Manhattan is awesome,, very Wes Montgomery inspired vibe. Great tune, I love the live version I have on something or other G3 disc or something I think.

Really oh man, you gotta get some Wes.. Manhattan is almost as a much a Wes Mongomery rip-off as my stuff is Lynch,,, LMAO.. but seriously its every sliding octave jazzy thing you ever heard by Stevie Ray, Johnson, Benson, Carlton, etc.. is a direct Wes Montgomery influence.. great stuff. Also see Grant Green.
