I have a MIM Fat Strat (HSS) that I'd like to swap pickups in. I'm looking at the Suhr Aldrich Humbucker. Does anyone use one in a similar super Strat type guitar? I'm wondering how they mesh with the QR since they both are mid-heavy? Does anybody have other suggestions? I'm also thinking possibly an Air Norton S for the neck? Thoughts??

I have a Suhr Doug Aldrich neck pickup in one of my Charvel guitars and love it. Very smooth and warm with clarity.

And it behaves itself with the Splawn mids? The YouTube videos I've seen on the bridge pickup absolutely smoke!! It sounds so powerful and smooth....

The Air Norton S neck can get a little muddy with chords, but for single note lines it slays!

The Air Norton S neck can get a little muddy with chords, but for single note lines it slays! Thanks! I was figuring since I'm a rock guy, the bulk of my playing rhythmically will be with the bridge pickup. With the exception of clean tone...the neck position would be mostly for the "Strat" tone. But now that I think about it even used a "solo" type pickup I'd still be playing chordal stuff as well at times. Any other recommendations?

I think that Rio Grande pickups are great with Splawn. I have BBQ bucker and two Half breed single coil pickups in one of my guitars and it slays. BBQ is deep and very rich in lower mids, great for solos and Half breed single coils work great for slightly overwound Texas kinda tone, suit my needs.

Wow...they are expensive! They do sound good in the YouTube clips though. Edit: just found them much cheaper on eBay. The Rio Grande website had them for an arm and a leg!!!

What type of music are you playing with these pickups? With a Splawn I'm assuming it's some form of higher gain rock...?? I like a healthy dose of gain so i just want to be sure whatever I choose to buy gels well with both the gain and mids.... I had some Dimarzios recommended to me as well. The Breed was one and the paf pro. That's the same recommendation that told me about the air norton s.

Yeah, I play hard rock stuff mostly, but played lot's of other stuff with them too, single coils sound great on the QR's clean channel and with distortion they are meatier than average single coil pickup. BBQ is very crunchy, lots of power, but still sounding vintage, very responsive and dynamic and cleans nicely via the guitar pot. Concerning Dimarzios, I really like Air Norton in the neck, but in the regular size, single version is muddy sounding and lacking sweetness to my ear in comparison with the original. Maybe you can get Injectors or some kind of their Virtual vintage series in the neck to go with higher power bridge pickup.

A guy from another forum I frequent has a Suhr SSV+ that I think I'm going to buy from him, as long as the price is right. And there is a local guy on CL selling a set of Lindy Fralin Mustang pickups....I may grab those and install them.

I had that pickup in bridge of one of my guitars. Very smooth warm sounding. Similar to a JB but not as bright. I loved it but had an offer from a friend for that guitar that i couldn't refuse! I will definitely buy one again if opportunity arises.

Cool....glad you liked it. The vids I've seen of it sound really good. I originally was interested in the Doug Aldrich model, but it seems to have really, really pronounced mids... and with the QR that's one thing I don't need more of!

A friend of mine got me some pickups to try. It's from a Russian manufacturer called Fokin, pickup is Hot Breeze bridge humbucker, 14 Kohm, alnico 5. I've installed it in my guitar in place of BBQ just to try it, and I'm stoked, really great and dynamic sounding pickup. Here's a video. vimeo.com/189508373
