Don, I just listened to it on Amazon... Its very cool.. different? No, not really. Its only different if you only listen to Radiohead and like 4 other bands I guess.. LOL. Sorry man I'm not budging on this one. I still love you though. Please for the love of God pickup up a Coltrane or Miles or Montgomery or Bach record. Your missing out on the really good stuff man. For what its worth (nothing) I spend 0 time on scales or chops. I work on Classical music, improv and writing and of course gig alot... Whatever chops I have I developed when I was 19 and thats about as far as I got with it. Whatever chops I need to record an idea I'll work on it about as long as it takes me to execute it.. thats it really.

Ohh Craig.......*sigh* ....there's just no telling you because you are an expert. First of all DO NOT compare the Pumpkins to Radiohead. The pumpkins wrote some great songs but you are right in the fact that they did nothing groundbreakingly new. They aren't even in the same league as Radiohead. Have you listen to their last album Hail to the Thief? Obviously not because you wouldn't have made naive cooments like that. Though I am sure you find a way to label it as "overrated, unmusical, blah blah". Whether you like the songs or not, there is NO way you can say that it is overdone. Name me one famous pop band doing anything remotely close to that. Sure the guitars are not "ripping and technical masterpieces" but the soundscapes are masterpieces. If you took all of your time trainnig on scales and put that effort into use of effects and production and applied that to a song it would be the same thing. THrefore you cannot say something played masterfully yet differently is horrible. You know white people killed our people with thoughts of "different is wrong". ;D I listened to the clips on amazon.com some of the most bizarre stuff I've heard in a long time...lol Yes, very bizarre. I like strange though. Since I have been listening to things like Radiohead, Mr Bungle, Jesus Lizard, Fantomas, Tomahawk, I noticed I have trouble enjoying straight rock! I get sooo bored with the same old verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus rock sond with slamming power chords throughout ....zzzzzzzzzz

yew know...I's jus a stupid ol' fool...aint nobody listen to me anyhow...but, ther is somthin' special happens when a GROUP of people get together and write powerful songs...its bigger than any individual self propelled thing...for som-un to suggest that a individual musician soloing is BETTER or more interesting than a group of songwriters with chemistry...well naw, thats jus not very intuitive or wise...we's all like different things and that is aw-right...but for one to think what they like is BETTER or more important or superior etc...that is jus down-rite short-sitedness...and the hobgoblin of jack-asses...an by the way...whitey done jacked me too! UNcle Tom's been spending too much time in his cabin hiding out. Little Eva and Topsy have been asking fer ya!

I have some Coltrane, Davis etc. Its great stuff but just not listenable for too long for me. Its best as background music while I am doing something. Well I then ask you Craig, if you can give me an example of a band doing (or has done) something like those songs you heard (which CANNOT be judged by a 10 second clip btw). Just curious. yes, there are plenty of bands doing electronic stuff and Brian Eno is the man at it but, put into a pop context with songs that are stll accessable yet truly unique...I have not heard it done like they have yet. I truly believe (as do many others) they they have set a new experimental standard for music to come.

Messing with effects and putting them into a pop format.

I think all that stuff loses something in the translation. I have this John Williams video where hes playing by himself in a Spanish Church and its just one guy, one guitar and a mic and it fills the room with sound,, amazing. I'm not at all impressed with electronic music or samples or any of that stuff. Theres nothing organic there, theres no real life to it. Sorry.
