I'm hoping that the removal of his beard might prompt him to actually be bothered again. He just got to a stage, (like a number of other players) where they decide that this is their sound and they don't need to be hungry anymore. EVH, Satch, Yngwie amongst others, just go through the motions these days. The problem in Zakks case is that his peak was no where near the other guys I mentioned. He was and is a great player, but he lost his drive. This is probably as his wife wants more cars and an unlimited supply of fairy folk to grow the biker gang. I know he can play outside the box he just can't be bothered. Dime on the other hand was always evolving. He had his trademark licks sure, but that never stopped him adding something new. I think The guys from Lamb of God were mentioned earlier, they're a perfect fusion of both Dime and Zakk. The outcome being 'interesting' solo's. I'd say that Petrucci is a pretty good candidate for keeping technical guitar alive through the dark times. He may not be a favourite cover girl, but DT pushed right through the 90's without a single 'Cobain' moment. He may slip every now and again but DT still catch me unawares every now and then. For me it's players like Lynch and Thal, who always seem to be working and changing. Maybe Zakk should've joined GnR, at least then he'd have had to learn some new scales. I'm just gonna check my diatonic's

I used to be such a huge DT fan. They've evolved beyond me now, but I think you're right, JP helped keep virtuosity alive through the "dark ages." That's a dude that never stops evolving and getting better. Some guys you go and see live and they just get better and better every year. If they're having an off night, I surely cannot tell. I put JP in the category along with other acts like Priest, Ryche, Lynch. Tipton, to me, is highly underrated. Go back and listen to the discography - his playing has evolved in leaps and bounds from Rocka Rolla to Painkiller. I don't hear this evolution so much with guys like Sakk, or Vom's boy, or even Wingnut sadly though I really like him. Maybe they started so high up on the technique scale that there wasn't much farther to go. Music is such a unique thing that, barring physical problems, you can get better and better until the day you die. Not like Sports and other such things. It's a shame to see good talent not used to it's fullest.

DT's music has been unlistenable for YEARS..quite frankly, ever since Rudess joined the band...even the Sherinian years were hit or miss..they need kevin moore back..
but anywho, petrucci's an amazing technical player, don't get me wrong...I don't dig his style all that much though..and it seems like he's thrown tastey licks under the chop in favor of trying to cram as many notes chromatically into a lead as he possibly can

Don't get me wrong the last album I bought was the Sherinian one and I sighted Moore leaving as to DT's decline. It seemed to go for a vintage sound, which was such a change from Awake. I did love Doug Pinnick puting La Brie to shame in Lines in the Sand mind ;D.
The first Solo from Lie is stunning and reminds me of Sykes kicking it on Still of the Night. The best part being JP sounding like he was about to lose it, then pulling it back. Winner!

Kings X circa 93 Dogman album..Just amazing . Superb playing, tone, songs and vocals. I'd sell my sister for Ty's rig on that album, although I doubt I'd get it for £3. I think Ty's an highly underrated player, but he uses too much chorus on his leads. Scoobrook, I think apart from your RR issue, you have some great taste. ;D

I totally disagree. I still like every DT release. Is it "Images and Words"? No, but its good in a different way. I think "Walk beside you" off of Octavarium is the best song they ever wrote. They get better and better but in a not so obvious way.

They get better and better but in a not so obvious way. you're kidding right? no grooves no melodic content..unless you count Rudess's carnival hijinks frenzied chromatic instrumental breaks that last for a third of an 8 minute long song? c'mon craig...we see eye to eye on alotta sh!t but new DT is garbage...technically speaking, they're top notch..but listenable? it's fooking garbage... the dark eternal night? just another example of 'let's do another chromatic unison line for five minutes..just because we can!' great talent..HORRIBLE song writers Awake was their last good album...infinity sucked with a few exceptions
