Who's rateable in todays guitar lot. I know that EVH is God , Hendrix is dead and that I love George Lynch, but of the young players who has the skills. I like Eklundh, Govan (first Brit since Sykes I could be proud of) and Steve Lynch.
Apologies to DirrtyCraig if this sounds like some ghey comparative thread, not the intention. I just wanted to know what the talented players/sexual deviants on this forum thought.

I'll speak for the deviants. My favorite modern guitar player is Michael Romeo from Symphony X. Their latest CD is just great with a great concept. He's a mindblowing player. I also really like Evergrey and I think their CD, "Recreation Day" is just fantastic. I don't know the guys' names, and the guitar playing is great but not "blow your head off", but the songs are really good.

See....thats the whole problem, there arent guitar gods or "hero's" anymore! A guitar hero is larger than life, and in a larger than life band, not just an incredible player. Govan is great, but a hero? I think not. Maybe we are all too old and jaded....perhaps this is a question better posed to the youth of today? Just my opinion.

I don't think of Guthrie as a hero as much as a man who's a great player. I like Eklundh and Thal as they do daft things whilst being amazing musicians. I'll always go back to George Lynch, EVH, Kotzen etc for inspiration. The last guy I met and really thought was cool, was Rich Ward. He wasn't playing the lead but he was a great guy, sounded amazing and he sure looked like a rock star. I just wondered if there was anything I was missing out on. I've not heard the Symphony X stuff so I'll give that a listen and I need to check out some Danny Gatton. I asked an 18 year old why he started to play guitar and he said it was because of Protest the Hero...I still have no Idea who these guys even are, I'm not even sure I want to find out

Mark Morton and Willie Alder from LOG. That's about as modern as I get. They have some great grooves going on. I'd still go Mustaine/Friedman.

Jammer's making me look old, with the nu skool players he's pulling out of backside. Hey, that's about all I know. My repertoire of "new" metal includes those listed, LOG - which I was not all that impressed, System of a Down - again not all that impressed. I sat through Headbangers Ball not long ago. I've never seen a bigger collection of totally contrived crap in all my life. It's simply not possible to be that angry and hateful at only 20 years of age. Totally overdone - all of it, and very little musicianship. Depressing really. I would rather listen to my wife's Pop Country. Maybe it HAS all been done like DC keeps saying. These days I either listen to my old man 80s music, or I listen to 60s/70s AM pop. I guess I like that "feel good" music.

But I did the same thing in the 80s I was listening to Yngwie when he came out with Steeler and all my friends would say "whats that crap?" There is some realy good Metal out there. You have to search to find it . Some of the best bands I'v heard has been some unsigned bands. Matter of fact me and Scott Splawn talked about local bands we knew. Ion Brittain was one of them. A two guitar band, these guys rawked!!!!! Scott gave a laugh when I ask him about Ultra Dave, that was one of the guitarist in that band. Ultra Dave and Cam Slam! What kind of names where these? ;D But they backed it up I miss the 80s no doubt! But I'm still searchin for good metal music. Long live Metal!

Jammer/Metal.....your both right.....todays metal is contrived, angry and oh so boring for the most part. There are a few gems if you sift through the crap. I dig Opeth a lot, even though I usually hate bands with the cookie monster vocals. They seem to do it with some taste, and the guy can actually sing and write beautiful melodies, plus the songwriting is unpredictable which I dig. Other than them, I usually keep searching out old bands I never heard much, or newer bands that play older type melodic rock, there are still bands that do it believe it or not. Ever heard of Seventh Key? Mike Slamer on guitar.....guy is monster player.

I did mean that as a compliment that you still know some new shredders, while I cough up Danny Gatton. that might send Paul into some strange chicken pickin' alternate universe...he's not a metal player, just to warn you Paul. But he's crazy amazing.
