I'm going with Jeff Loomis on this one. Hell, I'd take Loomis over Yngwie in his prime.

I'd go with Loomis too. Hes about the only dude in Metal doing something really interesting. Guthrie Govan is amazing, unfortunately I don't see his music every reaching a mass audience. ..and of course I think Paul Gilbert is better then ever, his 2007 cd and dvd are both awesome. He gets better every year.

Loomis really amazes me. He's ridiculously talented and can play about a billion notes per second, sweeping, etc...but he always seems to play song appropriate and with some melody behind it. I think his solos from the "Dead Heart in a Dead World" album are my favorite. And that's not even talking about his rhythm chops, too.
Guys like Petrucci have blazing speed and definitely have the technical chops...but to me, they don't have the same feel as Loomis and they just bore me in comparison at times...like Dragonforce... ;D

Dragonforce is a joke, its a studio snowjob. Those guys play live with TONS of backing tracks, its not even a real band.
I like Dead Heart the best too for Loomis solos,, the River Dragon solo is SICK!.. there is some stuff like Psalm of Lydia off the newer one that has some insane solos on it too, and I love that riff.

I've yet to hear Jeff Loomis, who does he play with? Is he anything like Chris Broderick? Some of the guys in my band have mentioned Alexi Laiho (Not sure on the spelling), but I've not heard any of his stuff either.
Best thing about CC, is that he was replaced by Kotzen. ;D

I've yet to hear Jeff Loomis, who does he play with? Is he anything like Chris Broderick? If you like Chris, you'll love Loomis. He plays with Nevermore. Here's "The River Dragon Has Come" that was mentioned earlier with some generic video behind it: youtube.com/watch?v=Nob0Bs18FtU

Cheers guys and thanks for the link. I came across Broderick when I originally bought a Powerball and I thought he was pretty impressive. I knew I'd heard Loomis name somewhere, it must've been when Chris was brought into play with Nevermore.
Has anyone tried out the Loomis Schecter? I thought it looked cool, but they're not readily available in the UK.
