See....thats the whole problem, there arent guitar gods or "hero's" anymore! A guitar hero is larger than life, and in a larger than life band, not just an incredible player. Govan is great, but a hero? I think not. Maybe we are all too old and jaded....perhaps this is a question better posed to the youth of today? Just my opinion. I completely agree here. Guys like Guthrie Govan and Michael Romeo are no doubt freaking amazing players but the music (IMO) just doesn't add up to "guitar god" status for me. It's too set up for technical shred and not very musical and accessible (again IMO). As for newer metal I really dig Opeth and Mastadon. Like grtwun said, good senses of melody and unpredictable songwriting. They are not outstanding guitarists by any means but that is just not important to me. I'll take great songwriting anyday over technical prowess.

So, what would be a good "gateway" CD from either Opeth or Mastadon?

I've never been so bored at a gig as when I went to see Dragonforce . Herman Li is obviously amazing, but Totman is awful and it was like one long song..painful. Now Mastodon are something else, their arrangements are superb and the songwriting gets better with every album. Colony of Birchmen is excellent and the last track off Blood mountain is like a weird modern Little wing, some amazing rhythm playing. Has anyone here heard of Sikth? The vocals are on occasion beautiful but the two guitarists are pretty stunning.

So, what would be a good "gateway" CD from either Opeth or Mastadon? For Mastodon I'd maybe start with Leviathan for the riffs and then Blood Mountain for the writing, playing and arranging. They have a really nice vintage sound to them, but still sound contemporary.

Hey, that's about all I know. My repertoire of "new" metal includes those listed, LOG - which I was not all that impressed, System of a Down - again not all that impressed. I sat through Headbangers Ball not long ago. I've never seen a bigger collection of totally contrived crap in all my life. It's simply not possible to be that angry and hateful at only 20 years of age. Totally overdone - all of it, and very little musicianship. Depressing really. I would rather listen to my wife's Pop Country. Maybe it HAS all been done like DC keeps saying. These days I either listen to my old man 80s music, or I listen to 60s/70s AM pop. I guess I like that "feel good" music. I did mean that as a compliment that you still know some new shredders, while I cough up Danny Gatton. that might send Paul into some strange chicken pickin' alternate universe...he's not a metal player, just to warn you Paul. But he's crazy amazing. I've seen a video of Danny playing slide with a beer bottle whilst drinking from it, then playing it through a towel to dry it . Was great stuff. Another great player who passed on early. I'm listening to Sonny Landerth at the moment. I dont play slide as it hates me, but I like his phrasing a whole bunch. I'll have to ask TJ who he gets his chicken pickin' skills from. I know some Johnny Hiland and John 5 but Lowery's distorted tone pretty ropey. I've been slowly adding country licks into my stuff since Pride and glory and MLF's Cactus Cruz.
