I have a great arrangement of Giant Steps I came up with years ago. I had planned on recording that with the Splawn for a clean channel demo.. I'll try to do that ASAP. Its using the Tuck appraoch to walking bass but certainly not as intricate as anything hes doing. When I do acoustic gigs I incorporate alot of his techniques like walking bass lines, etc. I do a cool version of "Tears for fears, Everybody wants to rule the world" Do it in drop D and walk the lines throughout the chord changes for the melody. I do the same for other songs like "Baker Street" and "Hysteria" although both those tunes I use DADGAD tuning. Tear's for Fears is an amazing band! That elimental (I think thats what its called?) LP is just incredible...

He's back now and their new album "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" is really good. I was a huge fan of "songs from the big Chair" and "The seeds of love"

I know I'm going to get flamed for this.. but Dons and my joking aside.. You really owe it to yourself to learn some Classical. I know morecowbell said he has.. Its actually a real eye-opener. I just finished 3 more Bach pieces and an Albeniz Spanish Piano piece and its sick and frightening how much music those guys shoved into a 4 minute piece. It really puts things in perspective when were talking about hair metal and radiohead crap,, which sorry, is really crap compared to this stuff. I know, I know.. I'm a pretentious music snob,, but I'm telling you,, get a few of these harder piece under your fingers and you'll have whole new perspetive on "MUSIC". Its really opened my eyes. Well again, that's a matter of opinion Craig. You might think its crap but there are many who think classical is crap, mostly non-musicians under 40. You can't judge music by your own standards. That's all great but to be honest I don't really care right now. I play in a rock band not an orchestra. I used to be concerned with having to learn all I could but as I grew up I don't have the time and realize that its just not necessary. I'm not out to impress other musicians anymore. I'm going back to instinct and enjoying playing with heart and not mind. Maybe when I'm older and not in bands I will have the desire, but for now I like writing songs that tell my story. Each individual is 'significant' and deserves to express themselves as they deem fit...if another does not appreciate the expression, that is fine...this is 'subjective' opinion (as long as one isn't breaking any common laws or openly and blatantly 'offending' another for prejudice, political or personal reasons etc...)...for an individual to impose their personal subjective opinion as objective fact or common consensus is self appreciating and shortsighted...the jargon of self absorbed egomaniacs...or, in the vernacular...a jackass.

Come on people Mick Mars rules!!!!!! LOL.. i don't get why people cut on mick so much...he IS a great player in his own right Vom, I guess you never seen crue at the US fest! All kidding aside as a riff oriented song writer he had great song ideas but his solo work was bad. In the 80's it was more about how good you could solo rather then your rythem work/songwriting so that why mick gets a bad rap. He did improve over the years as edward got worse. I do have a lot of respect for mars these days being he has a degenerative bone disease yet he still continues to tour.

I don't have the blues, I'm not oppressed in any way, my girlfriend didn't cheat on me, my wife didn't leave me, I'm not broke, and I have no anger toward society. I'm not interested in politics.. I really have nothing interesting to write about, LMAO.. so I just play alot of varied stuff and write music. No lyrics necessary. Thats why I play for myself. Thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it.. at least for today,, ha ha ha ha ha.

I think Mars (although sometimes lacking in the tone dept.) has written some great riffs. Primal Scream, Dr. Feelgood, Looks that kill, Wild side, etc. etc. You know it's the crue or Mars when you hear it. You couldn't replace him with some technical wizard guitar player. Motley wouldn't be Motley without Mr. Mars.

The only thing more pretentious than playing for other musicians is actually believing people care about a "story" behind your music. I think thats even worse. Thats why I play for myself. Thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it.. at least for today,, ha ha ha ha ha. one thing that I mirror you on (and I've said it a billion times here) is playing for yourself... never never NEVER have I played to please someone else...if it does, then that's great..if not, I'll look to see if there's a problem with my playing that caused the dislike or if it was just their cup of tea and I'll work on whatever needs to be worked on, if anything needs to be addressed that is... I figure if I can please myself, then I'm doin' ok..because I'm my own worst critic

Well Matt if we all played for other people we'd be carbon-copy under-achieving post-punk-pop-nu-metal-electronica-rap-cross-over clones vieing for the next American Music Awards spot. No thanks.

mick did write some great riffs....some of the best riffs to come outta the 80's were written by him..TJ mentioned one (and my favorite), looks that kill...that friggin' chorus rules....lol...as a lead player he leaves much to be desired...
same can be said for alex lifeson..you WILL be hard pressed to find a more chordally (if that's a word..lol) creative rythm player than he...pulls interesting sounding chords outta his hizazz....but once again, horrible lead player (IMO)..but I don't care about that...in Rush, it works and he's written more great chord progressions on any one album than I probably will in my whole life...
