Guys, I am curious about the third gear thing. Mostly the 1st gear. How does it sound? I know that I would not have a need for the 3rd gear, but the 1st I might! Scott says that it adds more treble, less gain, looses a little bass, and something was a little different about the mids? So, what can be described about the 1st gear?

scott pretty much summed it up for you..and like splawnfan said, it's the same as plugging into the low gain input on the older versions...
it's more wooden..has that plexi type of tone...has a VH-like sound..note, I said LIKE...you won't sound like him unless there's alotta other variables that go into it...such as playing..lol..
the problem is that alotta people think they'll buy a QR and they'll sound like EVH...WRONG! =D but you can get that same type of vibe....
when you think about it, eddie had alot of presense/treble in his brown sound...you get that with first gear moreso than second or third...
hope that helps

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about either selling my Marshall and picking up a new QR, or converting my Marshall in to a QR. Wouldn't be a big deal. I would have to change the transformer and the tubes and thats it. It would be like one of the older QR. My Marshall was almost totally converted when Scott modded it the first time. He took out the board and added his, with his filter caps, transformers, the whole works. Its like one of the older Pro Mods right now. I will have to think on this one!

There is a good chance all I would use would be the 2nd gear anyway! Third gear would be great for metal though. I am going crazy for a QR! LOL Like you guys couldn't already tell! LOL

I've got an older QR without the 3rd gear option...I seriously can't imagine needing more gain, but others demand it...it just depends on your needs. If the 3rd gear adds a bit of bass and slightly increases gain, I know I don't need it. My Buzzbomb cab throws the clearest, tightest bass I've ever heard..so much that I've started using the low input (1st gear) because my other guitar player noticed I was stepping on the bass player. (I had the bass on about 12:00) I could've turned it down more, but I really like the tone. As far as gain, I find that the 1st or 2nd gear (low or high input) with the preamp at about 1:00 is as much as I like...any more and I feel like I lose some picking dynamics. My other guitar player uses a gainmonster of an amp...a 5150, my QR has no problem keeping up or stepping all over it.
It's probably just me, but I learned a long time ago that in a 2 guitar player band, the rig with a little less gain sounds bigger on stage. I'm probably just getting old.

third gear has alot more gain..more saturated..i find it also to be tighter and more focused attack..i'd rather run third gear with the gain on 10:00 then second gear with the gain on 2:00 if that puts it in perspective..

I know man, I need 3rd gear too. I'm trying to justify buying a new one, but with my recent Classical excursions, school costs etc, I can't see spending the dough right now. Maybe in January.

I guess I am just trying to justify myself needing the 3rd gear. If I can get by with having a local tech add the Heybor Transformer and the EL34, then I might just do it. I would have a QR. If I could get the money out of my Marshall I would get rid of it for like $1500. But with Xmas coming up, it might me a hard thing to do!

Tighter? I've never played the QR with 3rd gear, so I don't know exactly what it would sound like through my hands...but in all my years of playing, more gain rarely got me a tighter sound. More compressed maybe? I could definitely see a more saturated sound from the added gain though. Not dissin' you shreder75...more like I'm just a tad surprised. But like you said, it depends what your application is. Over the last 5 years, my rig has steadily declined in gain. My first really "high gain" amp was a JCM800 back in 1986...before then, it was stomp boxes and whatever I could make do with. I recently shelved my Voodoo modded Road King for a JCM800 (took me almost 15 years to come full circle), then I came across the QuickRod...it was exactly the voicing/gain I'd been looking for all these years.
