you have a good ear my friend
you're absolutely right about the third gear clip..it's definetly more agressive...and very punchy..I think percussive would be another way to describe it..
I'm th inkin' that third gear might be too much for what we play (cover band...70's to present...mostly rockin', but nothing I would really call gut busting metal..that's me though..the resident headbanger..haha) at volume..then again, it depends on how loud I'm allowed to turn up..hehe...the december 18th gig is a smaller place so I won't have to turn it up as loud..so I'll probably keep it like I have it..and it is relatively low on the gain knob....10:30 in third gear the way I have it...but I'm gonna crank it before we play just for sh!ts and giggles to see what it sounds like..hehe
anywho, what I think I'm most happy about is that while on stage (using the cab as another monitor in essence) I won't have to worry about being buried by our bass player...cause as you know, these mo fos are loud and up front! that's another reason why I went with a 4x12...for just that reason..push more air on stage so I can hear myself better..as well as others
On the first gear, I can really hear the "woodiness" of the amp a lot. It definitely has lower gain and bass structure, but the voicing of the amp is still very "Splawn". I hear that same tone when playing mine.
On the 3rd gear, I couldn't put my finger on it, but after listening to it a bunch of times...it dawned on me, the biggest differnence between what I hear on my 2nd gear and your 3rd gear clips is the more "out in front" tone it has (3rd gear). It reminds me of the difference between vintage and modern on a Recto. The presence seems to be more pronounced and it has more "bite" to it. I definitely hear the added bass response and saturation, but the more "out in front" or "in your face" voicing is what seems to differentiate it from the other 2 gears. (All IMHO, of course.)
The cool thing is that all your clips demonstrate that the Splawn voicing is there...unlike a Recto where the vintage and modern settings sound like different amps, from what I hear (between my amp and your clips) is a bit more aggressive voicing between 2nd and 3rd gear. At volume, I can get my 2nd gear to sound like your clips...but I'll bet anything that at gig volumes, your 3rd gear will pound the other musicians in the band. (You're going to dig it, but they'll be pi$$ed.) I'd actually like to hear the 3rd gear mode at volume, that would be pretty cool.
