What, if anything can be done to make the amp less stiff and more forgiving?
When playing rhythm type stuff I'm happy with the amps response but it becomes a really tough amp to play when it comes to lead/single note stuff.
Now I've read posts where guys say that it has helped them clean up their picking technique etc... I'm no Yngwie or anything, and certainly my technique could use improvement, but this amp can be REALLY difficult to play.
How have you guys overcome this?
I've been thinking of maybe an OD pedal or boost to use only for solos? I saw a thread about this in the nitro section but not much here in the QR section.
I just ordered 2 small block speakers that should be shipping within the next week or so, so I'm hoping I'll see some improvement over the G12T-75's I have now.
Like I said, I like the tone/feel rhythmically but would like the amp to be a little easier to play leads with.
Thanks

Ive had the same problem and the first year was so hard. Once I played it for a wile I didn't even notice but it's totally melted with my playing. Overdrive helps and delay too. But all and all you just have to play it and get used to it. Once I adapted to my splawn all other amps are so easy to play, but you can totally tell they suck in comparison! Good luck friend. Lol

I just think that Splawn a tight in general. I use electro harmonix just to cut some of that high end.

What you just described sounds exactly like how i felt about my 2005 Competition. I was using a marshall cab and greenbacks with it. I now have a 2015 Quick Rod and it is way more forgiving and spungy feeling. Since your QR is brand new.......i am wondering now ....how much of the forgivness is coming from my EVH cab and greenbacks? Either way .....i am happy as hell with my new QR! I would wait and see how it sounds and feels with your smallblocks ONCE they are broken in.

I was thinking the same thing Briman. I was actually hesitant to even post this thread for that very reason. But hell, as guitar players we are always looking to improve out tone so I figured why not!

B+ option doesn't help?

I think you will like the small blocks with the QuickRod. As far as a stand alone boost pedal I would run it in the effects loop. I use a fulltone fat boost 3 but there are others. Keep us posted on what you decide

Yes it does help, I wish it dropped the plate boltage a little more though.

Keep us posted on what you decide He speakers should arrive in about a week or so, then I'll need to break them in a bit. I'll start experimenting with a few various boosts/drives that I currently own and see where that takes me.

A black EVH cab would look nice with your head. They have a silery logo on them that would look cool with your silver stripe. They also sound great with QR. Maybe you can get lucky and find a used one locally at a great price.

I've been wondering about those cabs...they look cool as hell. Aren't they usually loaded with V30's though....I don't think those are right for me. I can always swap too.
I've been tossing around the idea of getting an Avatar too. The price is right on those.

Just looked the EVH cab up online....I would need to swap speakers...they are only 60w handling capacity.

I'd pass on the Avatar cab, I just don't think they are worth it. There's so much better cabs out there. My Emperor cab will dominate any Avatar cab on the market. They gentleman that sold me my two 2X12 Emperor cabs had a really nice collection of cabs and speakers, including two different Avatar cabs. He said that the only thing compared to the Emperor was the two PortCity cabs and he explains that was only bcs of sound difference Air, Tump, Overtones, things that make a cab specific. But I specifically remember him telling me that the two Avatar cabs were a waste of money. I see them as being a cab that holds you over until you get what you really want.
My suggestion is save up and get the best! Speakers are all taste but cabs always come down to quality and craftsmanship.
I wouldn't think twice to buy a PortCity cab, expensive but we'll worth the money..

Evh cabs have EVH branded greenbacks 25 watt. Cabs are very expensive new though but great quality.
