Kind of an older thread now but I wanted to update my experience a little. Originally I was having a tough time gelling with my QR. So, I'm running an eq in the loop, I bought a Port City OS 2x12 cab and I loaded it with Small Blocks and Weber Beam Blockers. Clearly, I've tweaked my setup and I'm really happy to report that this amp SMOKES. It sounds so ridiculous it's scary. It's got so much sag that it didn't seem to have just a couple of months ago. It just thumps...I really couldn't be happier with how it sounds. Single notes/solos have become much smoother and I'm not fighting the amp anymore. Anybody that is having a tough time getting along with their Splawn needs to explore all the available options....

I thought I would chime in too. I couldnt gel with my QR at first, but i was playing it through a Mesa V30 recto cab. The day I got the splawn cab with Small Blocks changed everything. Also, as it has broken in I now run the mid knob at about 2 o'clock! Bass and presence at noon, Treble off. Sounds really cool and I only have to tweek the mid knob to deal with different rooms or guitars\pickups. Really love that amp. Also I really want a Nitro or super Comp. Just need a second and third job...

My problem initially was that I was using my eyes to set the tone knobs and not my ears....once splawndude pointed that out to me it changed my perspective. I run my controls with the presence and treble both off and the bass at 9:00(ish) and mids around 10:00. I use the eq pedal to pull some of the high mids out and it works beautifully. Right now I'm looking for a nice humbucker for my Strat. It just does not sound as good as my Les Paul( which absolutely slays with the BKP Rebel Yell pups). You're absolutely right when you said the smal blocks made the difference. I was using a Marshall 1936 with G12T-75's. Nope....they don't work with this amp. Way too bright. I'm going to swap speakers in that cab and use it as an extension cab.

Hey, I just wanted to add some thing to the original QR stiffness. I bought this weird pedal a wile back called the Shaffer replica, it's supposed to be the preamp in the old Vega wire less units Van Halen and Angus Young used back in the day. Well it's really expensive and I'm not even really sure why I bought it. But I really notice it made my QR so much more spongy, the leads I mean, I don't really use it for rhythm. But any how its a really useful tool I found when soloing, but man it expensive!

The reason I sold mine and bought a Friedman. My buddy bought a Quickrod new and absolutely hates it too. I played an older one I did some work on a few years back and it sounded great. Mine was a 2011 and I didn't like it a bit and he bought a 2016 and dislikes it. I find his new one harder to dial in than the one I had. I don't get using a Fender Twin style tone stack circuit with the master and solo boost in front of the tone circuit instead of behind it like most Marshalls. Amps are built great, just not a good fit for most classic rock I play. No sustain at all. My Friedman sustains just holding a note and cracking the guitar volume open. Found the top end very harsh and abrasive. I guess I should have taken it to FJA mods for an overhaul.

Tell your friend to sell his 2016 to me. I collect them lol. I absolutely love mine. You seiously cannot get any closer to VH 1 tone when using the drop voltage. I have tried every amp under the sun......
