If you want low volume sound, I understand those 18w 1974 type amps are pretty good. A ton of them on the used market for sure. To get my bedroom tone I am looking to upgrade my Johnson J Station to a Line 6 Pod...

Hypothetical question really since I can't even afford lunch. I love my Splawn, as you all know, but...I want an amp that can do low-medium gains tones and not be so aggressive. Even on Gear 1 and the gain down it still has a LOT of ballz. I'd like something with a little less sack and a great clean channel that still retains clarity. Maybe a plexi flavor? Only thing I need are an effects loop and at least 30 watts. Again, this is kind of wishful thinking because I am not stupid enough to sell my Splawn so there's really not a chance of me buying another head anytime soon. I'm just getting curious after having the Splawn for over 5 years. Sorry if I'm being a bonehead, but I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for and I'm not convinced you can get there with your PM. I too, am a PM owner. By managing the treble and presence (or treble only on the clean channel), and maybe using an EQ and a dark reverb tone -- I think you can get there without buying another amp. If you actually want another amp... JMPs are great amps, and can get a little softer / warmer than a PM, but not a big difference. I went from MV JMPs (w/ 6550s) to my PM -- very similar fundamental sound -- PM has more gain, features, and tonal flexibility but very similar fundamentals. If you're looking for a more pronounced change, I'd recommend looking at 6L6-based amps. Or maybe you'd like an Egnater Renegade that covers a little of both 6L6 and EL34 territory. Hope that's helpful.

Hey DD, I just played a Marshall 72' 100 watt Super Bass today, I gotta say that amp was amazing. Played it through an Orange 2x12 with the dreaded vintage 30's, with a strat. The sound was very thick, meaty and punchy, no distortion but just a thick healthy sound. It doesn't have the Splawn edge or bite and it's smoother than the QR, it actually sounded thicker than the Splawn, I guess because it doesn't have that aggressivness.
You don't need to play in crazy volumes for it to sound good, too low of a volume and it sounds thin, 9 o'clock on the volume knob and it sounds great, just don't expect to get any distortion out of it unless you crank it.
Anyway, i'm thinking of buying one since I love the authentic tone it has, but i'll probably get a clone since the old ones are pretty expensive. Anyone knows any good clones?

There are piles of Marshall clones.
Some of the cool ones I have heard; Mojave, Ceriatone, Marshall Re-issues. Offerings from Metropoulos, Germino, Sligo, Blankenship, Marsh, Roccaforte, all have good reps. For me; budget - Ceriatone, no budget - Mojave. But having been a Marshall guy for 22 years...Splawn QR is my first pick!
Good luck!

Get a marshall jtm 45 . You can get a good clean with a volume roll off and adding an effects loop is a no brainer . You can get a ready made loop from iron sounds and a tech shouldn't charge you more than $50 to install it . The one I had was not nearly as loud as you would think , I could get good bed room volumes with it .

To get my bedroom tone I am looking to upgrade my Johnson J Station to a Line 6 Pod... This is true, maybe minus the low volume--18W is still PLENTY loud. However, when you get the opportunity to dime the volume on the 1974X you get the creamiest, most beautiful overdrive you've ever heard. Having said that, I have two rigs I'm running right now and getting great tones out of: Stack 1 (in combination with Stack 2): Marshall JVM410H into Marshall 425A (OD1/Orange) Splawn Quick Rod into Marshall 425B (Full Power, 3rd gear, OD1) Stack 2 (in combination with Stack 1): Marshall Vintage Modern 2266 into MC412A V30's Splawn Nitro into MC412B H30's Stack 3: Jet City JCA100H into custom 4 x 12 G12T-75's & V30's Diezel VH4 into Fender HM412 MAGICAL!!!

^you've got some seriously nice amps. That is magical!
Personally, I have major gas for an Egnater Renegade. I love footswitching between the two channels. I set up channel 1 on 6L6, 65w, med gain, reverb and channel 2 on EL34s, 15w, high gain, no reverb and switch back and forth. Good times.

Ok change of plans lol. I need a back-up to the Splawn and an amp I can use at our practice space.
After I sell my Rivera & Traynor I should have a good chunk to put towards a decent backup head. I need at least 100 watts and an effects loop. 50 watt amps just don’t cut it for me and I don’t want to have to reset my delays/reverbs to go in front of an amp every time I go back and forth between my Splawn. I also need a good preamp distortion, I don't ant to go on the pedal hunt and I generally prefer amp grit anyway. I’m looking at about >$1000
Here’s what’s on my list (all used):
Laney VH1000r/GH100L
JCM800
JCM900 SLX
Sunn Model T RI
5150
What else should I be looking at?

I would help, but your 50 watt comment upset me and now I'm going to the forest to be alone.

What Traynor do you have? I am passively seeking a YBA-1. For mega gain, check out the 5150II. The Sovtek Mig 60 is highly regarded and cheap too, if you like 6L6s there is the Mig 100. Gain on that is reported similar to a JCM800.
Not many amps will provide you Splawn amounts of gain for cheap. 5150II, VHT Deliverance, JCM2k (tho I wouldn't recommend it!), are distortos I know under $1k used. Then there is Bugera...ok ok.

My all original 1981 JCM 800 2204, she is semi-retired and is never gonna be for sale. I love her, but since my Super Comp came home, it has become main squeeze. I am not sure how to make my image smaller.

I have the YBA-4, which is the YBA-1 guts in a (super heavy) combo. I just use it as a head and bypass the internal speaker. It sounds pretty great but I have to let it go. I forgot about the Sovtek...hmmm will look into those. VHT would be nice if I could afford it, screw those JCM2ks...I hate them lol, no comment on Bugera BUT Blackstar may be another option since I really like my HT-5. JCM800's are sweet too..would like to own one someday but it seems you need to find the magical one and weed through some crap ones.

Have you thought about the 5150 iii 50w? they run 999 new, are midi, 3ch, small enough to carry as your backup amp, really sound great in person the clips don't do them justice. just a thought used should be showing up by now
