Hypothetical question really since I can't even afford lunch. I love my Splawn, as you all know, but...I want an amp that can do low-medium gains tones and not be so aggressive. Even on Gear 1 and the gain down it still has a LOT of ballz. I'd like something with a little less sack and a great clean channel that still retains clarity. Maybe a plexi flavor? Only thing I need are an effects loop and at least 30 watts.
Again, this is kind of wishful thinking because I am not stupid enough to sell my Splawn so there's really not a chance of me buying another head anytime soon. I'm just getting curious after having the Splawn for over 5 years.

you may dig the Budda..they have low wattage versions..I played vlads, I think it's the SD80..it's darker and rounder than the splawn..the heaviest it gets is like Van Halen 2..but it'll do mid gain... then there's Orange..I dig those amps too..but they ain't cheap

I should play one next time I go down to Russo. I think they have them there. Oranges are nice too. I had the rockerverb for a little while but I found it kind of bland sounding. Yeah I would need to keep it under at least $1200 if I was to get anything.

I'm kinda fond of the Orange Tiny Terror. The other guitar player in our band plays one through a 4X12 at practice quite a lot, and for a shoe box size amp that lil' thing cranks! I also like the VHT Pit Bull combos. They have good cleans and can cover that onset of distortion and mid-gain, classic rock territory as well as some higher gain stuff. They're pretty pedal friendly and with the use of a good boost and/or gain pedal they can get into more modern sounding gain tones. Not sure if they even make the 1X12 combos anymore, but a friend of mine who used to play in one of the local bands here in town used to run two of 'em in stereo and those things sounded great. No problem keeping up with larger, higher wattage rigs either. They were pretty darn loud for 1X12 combos. Great tone.

I'd probably look at an AC30 head if I was in that market; I like the Vox mid gain sound. Might be a little shimmery for you, EL84s and all.
(BTW I've seen Shred saying 2nd Gear is actually better for softer low-mid gain tones. It's got less bite than 1st.)

DD just hunt Ebay for a good/used Deluxe Reverb. By an amp that is known for it's clean sound and the ability to take pedals well and then just use a TS to crunch it up a bit.

Yeah I have my Rivera but it doesn't quite get that open airy plexi tone too easily. I am looking at heads more than combos.

I will never forget the tone when I played through an original beat-to-hell '69 AC30 in GC. BEAUTIFUL! That amp has always been on my list. How do the newer ones add up?

A good Fender has always been on my list too. I actually bought a RI Twin Reverb when they first came out and thought it was crappy. Loud and crappy... and $1300. I guess some of the RI Fenders aren’t as good. I played an old Vibrolux that was heavenly though! The Fender and Vox amps are definitely amps I will own at some point. Right now I am leaning more towards a plexi type thing like Germino, Metro, JTM45 etc. Is that stupid when I already own one of the best Marshall type amps?

Haha...so that gear is best for playing "Lick My Love Pump?" ;D I'll have to try more low gain stuff in Gear 2. I always used gear 1 because it has slightly less girth (which is still pretty thick no matter what you try and do)

For classic rock on a budget, can't beat a later 70's Marshall JMP. If you prefer the earlier tones, the real Plexi often sells for less than a Marshall reissue, and a clone for less than that!
