For classic rock on a budget, can't beat a later 70's Marshall JMP. If you prefer the earlier tones, the real Plexi often sells for less than a Marshall reissue, and a clone for less than that! Do JMP's sound as good? I really don't have much experience playing many Marshalls. I owned the JCM900 but that sounded like a solid state amp. Some of the clones look nice for the price and seem like the logical way to go if I wanted a plexi tone for cheaper.

true.that's been my experience because it's the 'roundest' of all the gears..just like D minor is the saddest of all keys! Haha...so that gear is best for playing "Lick My Love Pump?" ;D I'll have to try more low gain stuff in Gear 2. I always used gear 1 because it has slightly less girth (which is still pretty thick no matter what you try and do) yes..yes it is!!! lol gear one doesn't have the beef..that's correct..BUT it's still REALLY agressive.... have you tried turning your treble down REALLY low?? I call that the vintage/modern knob because the more you turn it down, the more vintage-y the amp sounds...that's my take on it anyway...also, turning the mids down gives you a rounder tone as well....

Haha, love that scene!! No I haven’t messed with the treble much. I usually leave it right around noon and never touch it. Looks like I will need to give those things a shot. Do you turn your presence up when you turn the treble down? I'm not really looking for a rounder sound, more of a chimey, open gain instead of punch you in the yam bag tone that I usually have. lol Maybe sometimes, like say 15% of the time, I don’t want the “piss on your dead grandmother and skull-fook your boss’s wife while guzzling a bottle of JD and flipping off children” aggressive tone. The other 85% of the time I am in love.

Yes,
the JMP is quite different from the JCM900! As in 1966 Ferrari 265 vs. Fiat X19 different... If you can find the 4 input, non master volume one, that will give you some more "vintage" options with jumping channels and stompboxes. I get nice "vintage tones" out of the Quickrod with weaker pickups and middle gain settings on gear 1, but it still has that Splawn compressed feel.
I have a couple of 12ay7s, for S.A.G.s I will throw one in V1 of my quickrod and report back.
good luck!

I always did want a vintage-y Marshall. I thought about trying a lower gain preamp tube like that but I just don’t think the Splawn is going to get that open tone because of the circuitry. I'd be interested in what you find though.

I don’t want to get into attenuators and all that either.

LOL...I have a feeling you'd just end up boosting it anyway which would defeat the purpose of what it is you're trying to do with it
