I saw Zaza at the Akron Agora when I was 16. They had under 18 shows once a month and his band would always headline. I hadn't yet picked up a guitar or even held one for that matter... so watching this guy blaze Yngwie licks and sh1t was amazing. He got alot of flack back in those days for being an Yngwie clone.. listen to his stuff now and it doesn't resemble the Swede in the least. Hes a Cleveland legend and a huge influence on me when I started.

Yeah he got pigeon-holed as an 80's shredder for a long time for sure, and obviously can KILL that style but there's way more to his playing now w/o a doubt. I'd go see him if he came around here.

In the front, before any pedals.

alrighty, i made some more changes recently to my board. here's my main board. i mainly gig with the QR so this is the board i use: signal chain goes: guitar --> maxon od-9 --> barbe tone press --> loop-master a/b/y --> nitro (a) & quickrod (b) in the QR's loop: send --> korg PB tuner --> mxr carbon copy analog delay --> ernie ball vp jr volume pedal --> return. the nitro board (not shown) just has my other eb vp jr volume pedal in the loop. the new carbon copy and korg tuner are GREAT pedals. i am a big fan of true bypass now =)

I don't doubt Dons word guys but seriously he is in the minority of pro players are play without a line-level regulator/tube buffer. I was so frustrated on how my cool pedals like a phase 90 or wah would kill my tone,, even just two pedals! even with true bypass and the best cables money can buy.. until I found the VHT Valvulator. Growing up in Cleveland there was a local guy there named Neil Zaza who is amazing and I was reading on his website about it and thats when I bought one.. heres his pedalboard and what he says: www.neilzaza.com/gear/gear.html"I wouldn’t run a pedalboard without a Valvulator. What this unit actually does is brings your guitar down from instrument to line level so that it can run through your pedals at optimum value. What this does is enables you to run through multiple pedals and not lose any signal or high-end tone. It also supplies an active splitter on board for multiple amps if need be as well as a power supply. If you could hear the difference between running your signal through a Valvulator or not, you would be racing up to your local music store to order one." Whether ot not you need a buffer is ALWAYS in relation to your personal set up. I don't claim to be an expert but I figured if I was going to run a lot of pedals I would do a lot of research on the subject, so I did. Again, it also boils down to which pedals you choose to use and knowing which ones have good buffers or not. Craig, you talk about hating the tone suckage out of just two pedals but both of those pedals, the Phase 90 and wah, are well known culprits of having terrible buffers and being tone suckers. That's why a lot people mod them or put them in a TB loop. In fact, in that article link it says he had both his Phase 90 and wah modded for TB. I think the Valvulator is a great tool and if I hadn't already tried a decent line level buffer (Doobtone Microbuffer 2) then I would certainly add one to my rig. If I was running pedals with bad buffers or a lot of true bypass pedals I would certainly use one. Keep in mind, there are a lot of pro's who DON'T use them and have no issues. For instance, Trower has one of the most amazing tones I have ever heard live with a Strat and a Marshall and here's his set up: aycu34.webshots.com/image/13353/2002112576881881282_rs.jpg

I bought the Korg DT-10 to use at home and a few weeks later the Pitchblack came out =( No big deal since I only use at home though. I wish my board looked as neat as yours!

Can I ask what the tone press is doing for you?I can see that it's a compressor, but I have to say I've never used one with my live rig.

NS2 - I'd take that one off unless you're using it as a loop. Those (having fought with a few on a couple boards in the past) tend to cause more headache than they're worth - regarding tones, etc. DC, cool story about Neil. He influenced me a bit as well. Neil passed through the town I was in several years ago - was his first album maybe...been a while. Got to hang with him quite a while, jammed on stage during the show (me = completely intimidated, of course). Really cool cat and just a wicked, wicked player. Love that he's so melodic (more Neil Schon than anything). His entire band was just killin'. Shifted my thoughts/approach to soloing. Ordered up a couple of his videos later that week...just performance stuff and an interview. Talked a lot about his Spiderman guitar w/the lights. ;D They're still around here somewhere...will have to look for them now... I have noticed that the NS-2 isn't a fan of the clean channel with the settings I normally use..I just need some means of preventing the screaming when I can't get 2 feet from the amp and it's a metal night!

I'm a dmb ass from TaterTown but whats wrong with pluging straight guitar into amp? AC/DC did it and others and got the killer tones! Recordin wise you could add later. Keep It Simple Stupid Alot of you guys are wizards and I'm not but look at those early metal albums, straight into amps! Thats just me help me out?

Hey MH, Well with the splawn I like reverb and delay to cover my awful playing. Those original guys are actually good and I guess that's the difference

Yeah,I suck too! But I never could dial in a good sound with pedas(alot of money lost) So then I played the Splawn QR for the 1st time and I was like "WoW" pure tone! My buddy Hack sent me a Boss delay pedal and I've try using it and just gave to my son for his set-up and a Wah-pedal he uses on Warpigs outro solo. I'm realizing how primative I am with a guitar and amp(but I do know what sounds good to my ears and ain't that what matters?

Hi Windsen, As usual a beautiful setup . Can I ask what the tone press is doing for you?I can see that it's a compressor, but I have to say I've never used one with my live rig. Thanks Paul. I use it for my clean tones. I can get all kinds of sounds from it using the blend knob, which is the coolest feature. I have it setup to give a fair amount of "squish" to kind of give the cleans a bit more "life" and "squish" but blend in the dry signal to keep the attack and give it some spank. Overall it just kind of balances out my clean tone (no sudden jumps in volume like if I hit a string too hard) and gives it a bit of character. It's real subtle, but after messing with the tone press I just really love what it does for the cleans.
