ok, I think something very very bad just happened to my quick rod..
I was messin' around with an alesis midiverb in the loop...I was going from patch to patch...one patch apparently had the fookin' levels set WAYYY too high...
anyway, there was a loud noise and I noticed that a couple of the power tubes were running REALLY damn hot...they were friggin' bright as hell...
now when I play it, it's still loud, but it sounds very thin and harsh...
crap crap crap!!!
could it be that the power tubes are damaged??? did I blow something up?!?!?!?
I don't know what to do!!!

The power tubes might need changed. Could have just blown them. If you have extra EL34s then swap them out. If thats not the problem then you may have to get ahold of Scott. Sounds like a power tube problem. In some cases, you can blow something in a tube and they will glow brighter without totally farting out. If they do blow, then you most likely will blow a fuse at the same time. Its happened to me twice when I blew tubes.

can you just swap the power amp tubes like you do a pre amp tube? when I got the amp they were brand new in the box..so I'm assuming I could just put new mullards in there without having to bias or anything? I don't know much about that type of stuff....
if it was a fuse, there would be no sound, right?

Definately it sounds like a power tube problem, were you able to identify which tubes lite up bright? Check all the power tubes for burn marks etc.. Disconnect everything and just run your guitar straight in with the cabinet connected as well. What happens when you run it on half power, see if you get rid of the harsh sound this way and if not try changing the tube locations. You should be able to just drop in just about any EL34's as long as the are the same brand and at least matched pairs. If all else fails you should have the warranty. Best of luck.

when you're looking at the front of the amp, it was the third and fourth from the left...I did disconect the processor and ran it like usual and the problem persisted...I haven't checked for burn marks...and I didn't try it on half power..I'll try that tomorrow...
couple other things I noticed..before this went down I could get sound out of it even with the volume all the way down...now I get nothing until I turned it to around 7 30..and it went right to beign loud..with the harsh sound..very weird...
I emailed scott....musicians friend has mullard el34s so I guess I can order a whole quartet...there's a few different kinds though and I'm not sure which ones to get...

Try removing the 2 tubes you think are damaged, then put the 2 what you think are still good in the center positions would be 2 & 3 leave positions 1 & 4 vacant. Make sure it is on half power then try it briefly and watch the tubes carefully. If you want tubes I always use the www.tubestore.com there prices are pretty good and they have a good variety. Let us know what happens hopefully it is just the pair that are roasted.

You may want to switch all 4 out - usually the pairs are installed with the first pair in the center 2 sockets, with the next pair on the outside. Ask Scott though - he may do things differently.

I noticed that they have matched pairs at that site you gave me...would a matched quartet be better? I looked on musicians friend and they have a matched quartet..but they have a couple different kinds..different colors and 'soft and hard' versions?

The tube store has an 800 number you can call and talk to I think its John he will be able to guide you as to what to purchase if you want to do that, he explained to me once that there is no matched quartet, it is perfect pair matched together. I think the color coding is for break up and I think "red/soft" would probably be earlier break up for more power tube distortion, IMHO I would think the QR would have a cleaner tube due to the preamp gain it already has... I would probably go middle of the road the "green" if you order from Musicians friend.

I see..
anywho, I tried swapping out a couple of the tubes, putting what I thought are the good ones in the middle positions and it's the same thing..even on half power and halving the impedance yeilds very harsh and fizzy distortion..
sigh....

I would wait and talk to Scott. The amp is way too new to have any major issues and if so thats what the warranty is for.

yeah, I emailed him last night about it..
is it possible to blow an odd number of tubes? I can't tell which ones are good just by looking at them now...maybe the number 1 tube went as well and I didn't see it..hard to say...but I know at least 3 and 4 were running hotter than hell...which (correct me if I'm wrong) would blow them

yes - the tubes work in a push-pull fashion (1st tube pulls voltage, next tube pushes it out), so they can blow in odd fashion/numbers.

Anything is possible with tube amps..I'd say they went themal meaning very bright and the plates inside glow like the element on your stove.. Yeah they are pretty much done. If you have 2 other El 34's kicking around you could try them just make sure they are a pair though and try the half power mode again.
