smart? TJ is cool in a 'Culligan Man' kinda way...  I see now Jim downs on guys with long hair who like to shred and guys with short hair who like to shred. Wait a minute..........He hates guys with hair!  We know you like to play fast Jim. It's all over your soundbytes. Maybe we at "Teamshred" will take up a collection for you and send you to Bosley medical center. Once re-rooted you'll have a whole different outlook on things. I'm not 'down' on anything...I like practicing and do it as often as I can...the days of putting HUGE emphasis on arps and speed picking riffs is LLLOOOONNNNGGG gone....Don is RIGHT with his assessment of RadioHead because they are into 'experimental' creative music expression, a 'fresh' angle....guys like Paul Gilbert will NEVER be recognized in the likes of SRV or any blues player for that matter, because his style is FAR less appreciated by the mainstream music fan....he is creative in the way he strings his licks together, impressive really, but, it isn't very pleasant to listen to for very long AT ALL....so, what is the point then? he doesn't relate anything of 'emotional' value in his 'compositions'..... his tunes are like 'trinkets'.... shallow, little and forgettable.....fun? OK, to a FEW...do I knock it cause I can't play it?...no, I knock it because I would never WANT to play it...for whatever reason it does absolutely nothing for me...do I judge those that like him? no, I really don't....go ahead and like him, I'll lose NO sleep...but, on the other hand, don't judge me because I don't like him...bunch o hypocrites....heheheh

Paul Gilbert will NEVER be recognized in the likes of SRV or any blues player for that matter, because his style is FAR less appreciated by the mainstream music fan I totally agree with that statement. But then again it wasn't until the last 10 years that SRV was hailed as the almighty guitar player that he was. Guys like Gilbert, Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, etc. etc. etc. will always have huge followings. So I guess it doesn't really matter if they're recognized in the same level as SRV was. As much as I like and appreciate SRV. He spawned a whole generation of clones. I can't tell you how tired I get of listening to all the SRVauhnabee's. Yikes! I don't here too many 16 yr olds playing "Scarified" Why you ask? Because it's terribly difficult and ventures outside of the pentatonic box and that means they'd actually have to learn something new and for that I give Pablo Gilberto his due respect. ;D |

Their personalities come out when they play. and that is where I am having a problem with some of these recordings I have been doing here for people, most are wanting to be the " Musicians Musician" . the mass population loves music they can understand, that means uncomplicated groove (SRV) with touches of expressions. the gilberts etc.. only the higher musical ear is going to follow it.. the common people just cant follow it.. that is the subjective perception at work. I like to listen to other players to hear the personality.. all about expression to me.. Rock on Gilmore! LOL |

Gilbert doesn't always play super fast. Listen to "Green tinted sixties mind" There's nothing shredding in that song. He's tasty as can be. To say Gilbert can't improvise is just plain silly. I agree with you SRV was the man. But again saying Gilbert can't improvise........pfffft!! I'll send you a dvd I have of him where it's nothing but improv for about ...........oh ...........15 minutes.
