first off, nobody in a grunge band ever did drugs? ever nailed as many dames in a night as they possibly could? that's naive....
hell, even BEFORE the 80's, bands such as zepplin and VH were doin the same thing..so to say that's an 80's thing is simply untrue..
I will say that yes, there were alotta crap bands in the 80's....but, look at grunge....Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead
by the very name of the music, grunge was NOT artful...smells like teen spirit..that's artful?? if anything, it's a return to simplicity....that I'll give you....
listen to Ratt, 80's VH, Dokken, Ozzy....where's this excess that you're talking about? plenty of soulful leads there..plenty of people who knew how to play..yeah, some of it was formulaic....but, grunge wasn't? today's music isn't?
you know why kids these days like that older stuff? it's called the radio, dude....we're innundated with zepplin, hendrix, nirvana, pearl jam, etc, etc, on the radio....when was the last time you heard an iron maiden song on the radio? not often..and they're STILL selling out the garden....Dio STILL sells out the garden....I know...I was there when it happened...
and what kills me is newer bands...these schit bands that are forced down our throats..people who usually can't play their ways out of wet paper bags and sound like crud live...
here's a GREAT example of how the radio twists things to favor the 'band du jour':
Evanesence...in my opinion one of the words bands to come out of the last decade...contrived rythm patterns featuring a shrill female vocalist who can't seem to sing more than three different notes and has no noticeable vibrato...
'we're here Live with evanescence at the ____ center... a sold out crowd, it's amazing!'
do you know how many people that particular stadium held? 9,000...that's right, 9,000!! BIG FRIGGIN DEAL! and here you have iron maiden, who gets NO airplay on MTV, NO airplay on the radio..and they sell out one of the most venerable arenas in the country....MSG....
how many bands have staying power these days? not many..they're around adn they disappear...end of story...
these kids like those forms of music cause it's what's 'hip' these days..and I honestly hate to say it, but kids know d*ck these days...when was the laset time you were in a music store and saw a kid in their teens trying to do much of anything else other than playing some rehashed seether crap tune or a nirvana or metallica song?
they have NO influence because all the GOOD influences don't get played on the radio!
nirvana...oooo.....I can see them churning out a herd of virtuosos.....
anyway, we have a difference of opinion, obviously....80's rock and metal is STILL big....and it's not going anywhere...
