you know how you 'bend' notes is much more important than how many notes you can play per nanosecond... any thoughts? I practice bending notes and vibrato as much as I can...

I agree Jimbax. Vibrato is one of the most important (and often overlooked) aspects of playing.

+1 jimbax, there are two ways to kill a solo in my opinion. One is to throw some wrong notes in and Two is to bend too far/too little, esentiall yplaying the wrong note again. I manage to do both of those fine at shows quite often:)

man, when I haven't been playin my electric for a while I reach over and bend up a string and it sounds like I'm strangling a cat...after a few minutes my hands catch up to my little brain and I'm able to smooth it out but it takes some feel and practice...

less is less, more is more! remember that =) Do you still believe in Santa and the tooth fairy? no, I don't =) wanna know what I beleive in? I beleive what makes a good guitar player is technique, style, thoughtfullness and creativity.... I beleive that a good guitar player can play a fast passage AND also be able to do soulfull bends... I beleive a good guitar player does NOT have haphazard vibrato like Kirk Hammet.... I beleive that just cause someone can play fast or sweep pick, it doesn' tmake them a 'wanking idiot' as long as they know how to incoporate it tastefully.... I'm gettin' a little bit pissed at all the 'sweep picking is evil!' or 'shredding is evil!' crap that's been spouted off around here (not directing this at you, my fellow jersian..lol..this is just a general rant)... why is it when a violin player plays a thousand notes per second, they're a musical genius, while a guitar player does a couple of sweeps and they're just another 'wanker'? I'm trying to wrap my brain around this, but I just can't seem to do so.... case in point..the kotzen video..it's an instructional video...what do all instructional videos open up with? a showcase of what the player CAN do, technically....not what they will ALWAYS do in EVERY song.... if I got a video and I saw some dude during the opening showcase doing a bend or two, or a double stop lick or a slow blues triad, I'd go back to where I bought it from and demand my money back...plain and simple...I wanna see something I can't do....something I didn't think of doing....something to broaden my horizons.... by my clips and my screenname, people probably think that's all I do....'oh, he just plays as fast as he can'...that's about 10% of what I actually do when I play my guitar.... anyway, speed, sweeping, bends, vibrato..they're all techniques...last time I checked, the more of them you can meld together the better you are most likely to be...never knew that being able to do one negated the others... hey, that's just me though =D

a few years ago my wife and I were walking past a bar in Newport Beach and there was a band playing...we waited for a guitar solo and holy moly sounded like a lot of screeching and wrangling goin on...even my wife was cringing...the guy sounded good and was 'fast' as far as chops but when he bent notes it was terrible...on thing I noticed from dirrtycraig's video is his 'finesse' for a 'big' guy...whereas, on the other hand some players are at war with the guitar when they play and it is obvious that the guitar is winning!

Hey shred good to see you go off:) I know what you are saying but we just like to bust b*lls! I appreciate a good shreddin when I hear it and I listen to some of that stuff (if I can stomach the overall music). Heck, I just bought the G3 video with VAi, Satch, and Yngwie a month ago and I have watched probably 4 or 5 times already. Those dudes just amaze me. I do see many guys that have the fast thing down though and have no feel and don't know how to do a bend properly and make it convincing. Its a combinaition of all those things you mentioned that make a great player.
I like what jimbax said about some guitarists look like they're having a war with the guitar and the guitar is winning! Craigs video showed he had finnese and control while shredding. That's what I like to see. Its like a race car driver; if your you're going to drive at 200 mph you better learn some darn control!

I know how these things can be misinterpreted over the net... yep, it's all about control..a sloppy SOB like CC deville is an example of how NOT to play the guitar... Kirk Hammet is also a good example of how NOT to play..especially his vibrato... I saw that G3 show in New York..what a blast =D Neil Schon and John Petrucci were there that night too..I wish McAlpine woulda played more guitar though than stayin' in the background on keys =(
