yea big time, Thats too bad , as the 90's where the end of fun, love, more love, fun.. it was pieceful in the 80's, everyone got along. thats a lot better than being mad and frustrated. and lots of blondes looking for fun.. nice catch craig probably the most intelligent thing you've said in this thread yet =) the pendulum swings....they were mad and upset because society was worshipping shallow and paper thin big hair rock stars...it was borne out of that frustration (partially)...they 'were' counter culture...until, of course, they became what society worshipped and that caused problems for them... I remember seeing an interview with 'Queensryche' lead singer (not big hair or grunge..)...he was all sad, he said: 'I have become what I have always hated'...he went on to elaborate that the band was always against the 'fat/rich corporate sponsored' type of lifestyle...then he said one day he woke up and realized that HE was living in a big mansion and his band and his existance was dictated by the same corporate people he always hated and that THEY were becoming stronger and richer from he and his band being part of THAT system etc...pretty ALARMING when you wake up and really realize: 'hey, I'm NOT getting over as I thought I was"...this exemplifies the 'control' of music industry execs for BOTH big hair and grunge and? you name it...except self produced rap guys...

Shreder75 says: Preach on my brother! There was more to the 80's hard rock/metal than just cheese.I personally love alot of the killer guitar playing that came out then, and would rather hear a good/great guitar player than a hack anyday. Granted there was a lot of cheesiness , but the press was a huge factor in pushing that. There was and still is a lot of great metal/shred guitar playing going on . Respect? To say that CC Deville was a good songwriter is ludicrous.Sorry but I strongly disagree......... Thank heaven for real musicians still practicing and perfecting their craft. What a sh*tty music scene it would be if we judged greatness by was what is forced down our throats by corporate music biz.i.e radio,MTV etc... Sorry ,I just had to jump in here.I am totally agreeing with Shreder75 !!!!!!!! No harm Just my opinion ;D oh, I got alot more where that came from..LOL... and thanks for the support..I was starting to think there were no more like minded individuals here.... hey, today's music probably does represent today's youth...generally pissed off for no reason, misdirected, slaves to the media and what seems cool...so in that respect it makes PERFECT sense.. I just feel sorry for the fact that they have no real influences to speak of... yeah, there were alotta bad bands in the 80's..but that can be said for any decade.....also, they may LOOK like a hair band, but dokken was anything but =D their sh!t is still timeless

you can say that CC sucks...jumping on that bandwagon...but the guy wrote hit albums...has songs that are still in the public consciousness 20 years after they came out...i'd rather be remembered as a good songwriter than as a richie kotzen... quite frankly, I'd rather be recognize for my talent by someone who knows what the hell they're talking about rather than write crap and be immortalized by the general moronic populace.. that's just me though..it's not a popularity contest....

I just cant take the whole " catagory " and toss it away, there was some great music in the 80's, and there was some very bad music, in the latter years they ( corporate ) went a little wackey, just like they are doing today. run it until its death and the same thing over and over. Guns and Roses came out when "Radio" really needed a good rockin band. At least CC (and others) made it. I would much rather be a highly paid musician. even by corporate sponsorship, the (corporate) world pays me now anyway. I went sirius radio for Hair Nation Radio, Rock on.... wonder if XM has that? now boy george, how does that happen? hair nation rocks dude..lol

You can't just sum up 80's "Hair Bands" and say they all were shallow and unmemorable.C'mon. Ok.Big poofy hair.... Guns and Roses had it-great rock band/Slash rocks White Lion had it-great guitar player/songwriter Paul Gilbert-no explanation needed Whitesnake Vinnie Moore Yngwie Ozzy/Jake/Zakk etc.....etc......this list goes on and on...... Lots of bands found the Aqua net , there's no doubt. What was pushed was the commercial and palatable pop drivel I think we all would agree is shallow. Granted alot of music that is "popular", now and then ,sucks and is void of any actual musical worth. But in the 80's I was listening to what I deemed good music, not what MTV and the radio was cranking out. Like Testament,Metallica,Megadeth,Fates Warning,Iron Maiden ,Yngwie, combined with all the classics(Van Halen,Zep,Scorpions,Sabbath,Ozzy ,etc...) Generally great musicians and awesome guitar players.I really wasn't worried how big their hair was or how brightly colored the outfits were. I was Not listening to or digging Warrant,Enuff Z Nuff, Pretty Boy Floyd ,Poison etc. Great songs? Great players? I don't think so.But they were on the radio and MTV. This was sold as Metal to mindless twits who didn't know any better. I think that these types of 80's hair bands are exactlly what Jimbax is describing..... One of my all time faves for cheesiest 80's "metal"- Madame X "Your High in High School" Now that is some drivel boys and girls............. yea, your right, I know there was some decent stuff in the 80s ...I mostly over-generalize to see if I can bait 'shreder' into a splawn fansite record breaking 3rd rant! hehehe ;D hey, I stick up for what I beleive in...nuff said.... if I'm the only guy on here who doesn't play for popularity, or to get laid or to be 'cool' then so be it..I'm happy with that....and I'm thankful I play for ME cause I enjoy it, and I'm not a slave to convention..... HUZZAH!

Sweet Caroline...Neil Diamond....that's another 'timeless' song....chicks go crazy for it... I don't think axeman's missing the point at all... timeless/popular doesn't mean it's good...THAT's the point.. with the grunge movement came laziness...people saw guys who barely bathed, much less practiced their instruments and said 'hey, if they can do it, I can do it!'...as they run out, get a $50 strat copy, plug it into some big solid state half stack with a DOD grungemaster pedal... same thing with the whole glam movement....there's a difference between hair and glam....Poison? Glam....Dokken? Hair...Enuffs Enuff..Glam...etc etc...poison...possibly four of the worst musicians ever assembled...Ricky Rocket? please...Bobby Doll? c'mon...CC Deville....one of the sloppiest messes in all of guitardom...I will say that he wrote a couple of catchy tunes... speaking of which...u look at that Richie Kotzen video I posted below when he was in poison....chicks wanted his hammer big time..cause he could play? no..because he was IN POISON... things usually become popular because chicks dig it...and we've pretty much established that chicks know squat when it comes to music..if they can dance to it, they like it... let's see...what else was popular... the Macarena....Rickie Martin...as I've said, Neil Diamond... I thank God for satellite radio....I was tired of the 'band du jour' being shoved down my throat...tired of hearing the same rehashed pearl jam songs..tired of hearing billy corgan whine on and on and on about something nobody cares about... I'm 30..I was relativly young during the 80's...so I missed the whole 'big hair, c*ck rock' thing...so most of the bands that I enjoy now and when I was hitting my teens were already past their prime...someone said that the whole hair thing is a fad, blah blah blah..kids don't wanna hear it...I don't care what age you are, you either know good music or you don't.... I'm a rocker..plain and simple...if it rocks, I dig it...doesn't matter who the band is...there's a couple (and I do mean a couple) poison songs that I like...there's also even a couple nirvana songs that I think are catchy...would my world be shattered if either of these bands never existed? doubtful...

Theres only maybe 10 tunes my band plays that I play note for note solos in. I mean out of all the tunes in the set, only 5 tunes that are good enough solos that I respect enough to play them faithful to the record.
1) Eruption/Hot For Teacher
2) Bark At The Moon
3) Wait- White Lion
4) Ratt,, all of them
5) All the Dokken
6) flyin high Again
7) Poison, Nuthin but a good time.
Anyone who thinks CC Deville sucks should learn the solo to "Nuthin but a good time" note for note, then call me in 2 months when you can play it cleanly at half-speed. CAUSE ITS HARD. I play it note for note and nail it 99.9% of the time, but its a tricky, quick and technical solo.
And don't gimme any crap about how easy it, is.. I want PROOF. gimme a clip a video something to back it up. Then and only then can you rip on CC, cause when the guy was sober he could play his @ss off.. even though I'm not a big Poison fan too, he was pretty good. Compared to Richie Kotzen? uh no, of course not, but he was good.
