JimBax, I agree with what you said about being too technical and just jamming. My big chops shreddding days are long gone, I just play now and I NEVER practice rock, metal or blues, I just play in my band and do alot of improv. Even the 2 clips on the Splawn site mostly improv except for the rhtyhms,, I am a total fan of jamming and am 100% agreement with you. The only thing I practice anymore is reading and Classical (Strict nylon string style, not "neo")which I do only for me. Most people don't even know I do it unless they come over here to my house and see the sheet music laying all over the place.,.. I play a bit of classical guitar...do you sight read? I can chop up pieces and work them out slowly...I've done a number of Bach, Albeniz and Sor comps like that...in chunks..my right hand technique is 'wrong' but I get the job done...I had a classical guitar teacher buy a Ramirez 1A from me in the late 80s and when he arrived I was playing a classical piece with my back turned...he said: 'excellent', very nice....' and then walked around and watched me play and said: 'ooops, your right hand is wrong and that will limit you to what pieces you can play' ....yep! he's right...it has...I don't play with my 'nails' either..

This is quite the thread. Randy was great. No denying that. EVH is great. There's no denying that. Demartini is great. No denying that. Now you all shake hands and stop this bickering. LOL!!!!! By the way Nuno Bettencourt,Steve Morse, Virginia Luque, Brent Mason, Ben Lacy, Tuck Andress, etc. etc. etc. Are all (In my opinion) much more accomplished guitarists than any of the above mentioned in this thread. That ought to spark up some convo

Now You kids behave..or I'm gonna have to slap you around again...you got it about 90% correct...George Lynch was at least equal if not ahead of Randy at that time...I don't know this Warren DiMartini guy but he knew he wasn't on Randy's level then...I think he came out of San Diego? the only guy that was ahead of randy...ever...now...tomorrow...2 weeks ago...20 years ago...was EVH... oh, dude...PLEASE...the 'only' guy?? you're making RR out to be some sort of god, which he's not... I can think of plenty of players better than RR....ever, now, tomorrow, two weeks ago, 20 years ago... Steve Morse Steve Vai Joe Satriani Al Dimeola John Norum Nuno friggin Bettencourt just to name a few....

lots of guys are influential though..let's not mix arguments here...lol...
EVH was big into cream....THAT's one of HIS influences....
if we're gonna talk influences then you have to bring up the likes of Paige, Beck, Hendrix, etc, etc, etc....
but that's not the argument =) or debate..or whatever the hell we're calling this miss mash of a friggin' thread.......lol....
I just think I'm not starting threads anymore..cause it seems the more I do, the more they turn into totally off topic debates....

I certinaly can deny that nuno is EVH junior...I'm not talking influence wise or anything....strictly from a technical standpoint....nuno is better than eddy...he can do eddy simply can't....he's a twisted guitar wizard have you ever listened to any of john norums solo albums? or just what he did with europe? listen to his work on the Don Dokken solo album, AND his solo albums, then we'll talk, dude....his phrasing is crazy... I don't see any of these guys as God's anymore, dude....I see guys that I like, guys that I don't like...guys who I wish I was as good as (not sound like, but could play as well as) and guys that I can't stand....I haven't worshipped a guitar player in over ten years.... I don't try to emulate anybody...I don't try to cop other people's links... this reminds me of Metallica syndrome...that band could put out a phuckin' polka album and blind metallica fans would tout it as the greatest cd ever and it would go platinum by lunch of the release day.... I'm a fan of music, but I don't follow anybody blindly..as much as I love Lynch, I don't worship him as a good..cause technically there's guys out there better than him... oh, here's a few more Marty Friedman Jason Becker (poor guy..really sad situation) Steve Stevens Pablo Gilberto =d I will not deny that RR was very influential in his day...even though he was really just tryin' to cop EVH back in the day after EVH broke..then even lynch fully admits that they ALL WERE.... but I'll tell you one thing..I don't worship RR, I hardly listen to the guy and I play ok....lol.. oh, dude...PLEASE...the 'only' guy?? you're making RR out to be some sort of god, which he's not... I can think of plenty of players better than RR....ever, now, tomorrow, two weeks ago, 20 years ago...
