I don't have a Quickrod... but I do have a Street Rod combo, can I play!? 1997 PRS CE24->Boss Compressor->Tuner->Banshee talk box->Colorsound Wah clone->"New" script Phase 90->MXR 5150 OD->Front of amp Loop send->Zoom G3 multi effect (delay, chorus, other toys)->clean boost-> MXR 10 band EQ->return Combo has Creamback 65 in it, I pair it with a 1x12 extension cab with a greenback in it, great combo. PRS has Dragon 2 neck and Duncan 59/Custom hyrid in the bridge. SR settings, from memory: Loop Volume about halfway OD volume about 9:30 Gain about 1:30 Solo about 11:00 (really fuzzy on this one) EQ pretty flat but presence up a bit and bass down a bit Clean volume about 8:30 (clean channel is pretty loud on my SR) Clean EQ pretty flat, treble up a bit and bass down a bit I usually use gear 1 OD1, kick in OD2 on gear 1 for more "oomph" In previous bands I'd use gear 2 OD2, but that was for a more modern sound.
I play in a classic rock cover band with a female lead singer. Lots of Blondie, Pretenders, Pat Benatar and some Stevie Nicks/FM to boot. Also do Zeppelin, Joe Walsh, Frampton etc... Oh, we're doing Barracuda by Heart now too.

How do you like the 59/C hybrid? I bought a used 59/C bridge with a Jazz neck both covered in black nickel. I was planning on doing a KnE build and using those pickups...

I really like the 59/C hybrid. Don't even think about it now... the Dragon 2 bridge used to bug me. Sounds good distorted/clean and split.

BTW... on my Street Rod setting treble to zero just kills the treble, there's no mojo there on zero treble on my amp. Some Quickrods have some thing going on with zero treble...

This is gonna seem odd, but I took my Tung-Sol out of v2 and stuck a Sovtek LPS in there and I turned the loop level knob all the way up and turned my volume down on the front of the amp and it sounds brilliant. The gain was almost sounding muddy before and now it’s back to being very articulate and sounds just like it should.
I think I’m gonna grab some more 12ax7’s and replace all the Tung-Sols. Maybe just some Sino tubes?
Cvogue that sounds like a kickass setup. Every Seymour Duncan I’ve played has impressed me. I need to get around to buying myself a set of them. I bet that’s a lot of fun playing that stuff with a female lead.

You know, yesterday afternoon I was thinking....I don’t remember if we talked about what tubes are in your amp! The stock tubes are Chinese all around. I have experimented till the cows came home with tube rolling in my amp. In the end I have found that for me, the stock tubes sounded the best.
What have you got in your amp now? Power and pre?

I still have Tung-Sol RI’s in V1 and V2. And now I have a Sovtek LPS in both V3 and V4. The stock pre’s were microphonic when I got the amp used. It has Electro Harmonix EL34’s in the power section.
I’m going to pick up some Sino 12ax7’s from tube depot, and I’ve also ordered some 8th gen Chinese 12ax7’s. I haven’t really given the power section much thought to be honest.

That’s wrong. I have a Sovtek LPS in 2 and 4. And the reissue tungsols in 1 and 3.

I don't get all the hype about Tung Sol pre tubes. Tried them in a few amps and never been impressed.
JJs have been hit and miss for me but in the right amp they can sound great! I gave a couple in my SR.
The stock Chinese tubes seemed s bit mushy to me, the JJs helped.

When I first put the Tung-sols in I liked them, but something changed after the last time I loaded the head in my backseat after practice because it sounds awful with them in there now. Very muddy.

I’ve been through the same scenario too. I have rolled everything through the amp including NOS Telefunken, NOS Mullard, NOS Tungsol 12ax7’s...you name it. And I like them at first. But I always seem to come back to the stock Chinese tubes with this amp. Now my JCM 800 loves the NOS stuff, so I’ll use them there and keep Chinese for my QR.

I’m pretty new to tube rolling, my previous amp was a JCM 900 and it was really not responsive to different pre’s. I imagine because most of it’s tone comes from diodes. This QR really changes with different tubes and speakers.
You think it’d be worth trying different Power tubes?

This QR really changes with different tubes and speakers. You think it’d be worth trying different Power tubes? Well, if your tubes are still working well enough I think I’d just keep them in there for now. But that said a set of Sino from tube depot is like $60. So relatively inexpensive. Last time I changed power tubes I had a set of RI Mullard on hand. They were ok...a ton of mids. I then ordered a set of JJ 6CA7. Much better but I still felt like it was missing some mojo. So I went with the Sino and got my tone back. I will say that I think I biased the JJ’s too hot. I emailed Scott just to ask what he biased to. He told me that for my amp (with the Drop B+ switch) set the switch to the off position and bias to 30mA. Then once the switch gets turned on, the plate voltage drops thus raising the bias to about 40mA. So, I did exactly what he said and the amp has never sounded better. Now the preamps....like I said, I tried every combination I could. I seriously have about 40-50 NOS tubes and at least that many new production tubes. EH-bright JJ-dark Tungsol-bright yet harsh (ish) I do have a new Mullard in the amp clean channel low that I think of it. It sounds phenomenal there. But the rest of the amp has the Chinese tubes.

Thanks, yeah it is a really nice setup, sometimes at band practice I just smile at how good it sounds, and it blends really well with the bass and the other guitarist's Marshall. The whole band just sounds really rich. Female lead singer is great too, great voice, music teacher so she knows her sh!t and just a really cool person, no diva BS, so nice! One thing I wanted to mention... despite the conventional wisdom that Sovtek LPS 12AX7's are good in the phase inverter spot, on some amps they can't handle the voltage. This was the case with my old Peavey Ultra 120 Plus. Took it to a top notch amp tech here in town when my tone went to sh!t and he said that the LPS in the PI spot had blown. He actually said for that amp the LPS is one of the worst tubes to use in the PI. V4 is the PI tube in Splawns so try swapping that one with others.
