Haha I figured the Splawn part, but that would be funny if it was on the Marshall web site. Cracks me up !

What strikes me is that Marshall hasn't produced a great amp since the 80's.

Shame too...
...cause you'd think they'd be all over it.
They really could have dominated if they had tried harder.

I think that's exactly why companys like Friedman are racking in a killing now an days...
people are tired of trying hard to make something sound better than it actually ever can be. Now you can buy amps that sound killer from the get go.
That's why I was so impressed by the quickrod, so good strait out of the box, bam!

I completely agree. I think people want a simpler, great sounding amp. It seems that Marshall is trying to be "all things to all people" so to speak. I, for one would rather have a killer amp that does one or two things great instead of an amp that does many things mediocre.

For years people have been asking Marshall for 1987x, 1959x, 2204x, and 2203x with a bit more gain available, f/x loops, and most importantly, real good power reduction/scaling. I know some 1987x's and 2203x's have loops but that's just a start. The YJM was a step in the right direction but that was another limited production, signature model, with an inflated price tag. And, would have preferred a Superlead voiced more like a '68 12000 series. Heck, they still haven't reissued a 2204 at all. Just make the great JMP tones usable in today's world.
Splawn, Bray, Friedman, Bogner, Victory, etc., are all doing Marshall better than Marshall. Even EVH is going to get in mix with the rumored 5150-34 vintage circuit.

Right on the money, Cipher. Nowadays there are so many builders that out-do Marshall. It's like the Blackstar story I heard....the guys that started Blackstar once worked for Marshall and had great ideas that Marshall didn't want to hear, so they started Blackstar....and they make some killer stuff too.

Blackstar's oversize and pro series cabs with the custom voiced v30's are killer!

Ok,...so here's a new possibility.... Another CL guy is selling an Avatar 212 loaded with WGS veteran 30's which are a 60W speaker. What do you guys think of that? He is selling at a great price. The only issue I can see is that the grill cloth probably needs replacing. He said it's a bit loose due to a sound guy pushing a mic into it.

Very good sounding speakers! V-30(ish) minus the upper mid spike. But, only your ears will be the judge of what works for you.

That's what I was attracted to with these speakers...another member here had warned me about using Celestion V30's with the QR because its already a mid heavy amp but the Veteran 30's seem a bit darker(in a good way). I generally like a "mid present" sound but on the darker side. My only complaint is that this cabinet isn't the style I would prefer but... At the end of the day it's about how it sounds.

I'd pass.
And that was probably me on the V30 thing. LOL
I'm mainly repeating what I've heard countless others say that Vintage 30s do not mix well with the QR. My QR does not sound good through my V30 Mesa Recto cab. True the Vet 30 will probably not be as bad - but my fear would be that they are too close together. That and the loose grill cloth and aesthetics seem to make this a no go. Get what you will be happy with. Obviously, I'm a bit more OCD hahahahahah.

Splawndude....yeah, I'm sure you're the person that told me to be careful with the V30's...lol And you're right about this cab too. It's probably not the one for me...I have my doubts so I'll listen to my instinct and leave this one alone.
Funny thing is, I emailed Dave at Avatar 3 times over the last 2 weeks and he hasn't returned any of my emails....strange? I thought he maybe wasn't getting messages thru the "contact us" form in the website, so I pasted his email into my isp email and sent one that way...no response. Hopefully he is ok and not in the hospital or something..,,

I'd try calling him. That's how I reached him. Great guy. I hope nothing is wrong either.
