this is a question for pretty much anyone, but after seeing craig's video, it popped in my head....
especially third gear....
craig, do you find that you dont' have to have the mids up as high when you have the gain runnin' pretty high on third gear??
I usually have my gain around 10:30 or 11 on third gear, and my mids are WAYYY up..around 2:00..sometimes more....

I think that depends on your guitar and pups...and if you prefer a more 'scooped' tone.

I don't really dig scooped sounds like I used to...I have an alder body guitar with a JB in there...just lookin' to get a more legatto type of smoothness I guess? hard to explain..lol....

Me and Shreder are alot alike,, its funny but scary.. I don't like a scooped sound like I used to either.. I run my mids at about 2 o'clock too. I pretty much always do though...

well, since your not playing death metal...JB pus are VERY heavy in the top/mids and the QR is a major 'upper mid' amp...with my set-up I run: presence 2-3 (all o'clock), bass dimed, mid and treble 12 noon, gain dimed...it 'cuts' WAY better than my class A amps that tend to blend and get lost in mixes...which is another question: do you want to blend or offend?

Blend or offend... good question. You know when I really realized how much better the Quick Rod was, is when my wife told me something like "your just as loud as ever, but it doesn't hurt my ears anymore on the dance-floor".. When a non-musician can tell you that, thats pretty big compliment on the tone. I think Scotts cabs have alot do do with that too with that thick-@ss grill cloth.

I was totally happy with my sound at my last gig....but last night I put new strings on my guitar and nothing was pleasing my friggin' ears! so I started movin' knobs...lol... this is all bedroom tweaking stuff..I find that when it's cranked I'm happy with it no matter what I do with the knobs for the most part..

Is still say this amp sounds great at any volume.. When John from Physical Graffitti came over here to pick up his amp were were jamming and tweaking till 3 AM in my home office/studio, and never put the master past 8 o'clock.. its sounds awesome. Maybe its guitars too? My Mansel sounds insane and he has a couple of 1960 Les Paul reissues that sound great too.. The Mansel weighs more than a Les Paul,, it just a slab of mahogony.

I dunno..I think I was just having one of those days..fingers weren't doin' what I wanted to, and it just seemed generally harder to play..but I usually do have a problem with playing with brand new strings....and nothing tone wise was doin' it for me

To not offend I always run my amp shield in front of the speaker cabinet. Check them out here www.clearsonic.com/a2-4_amp_shield.htmlWorks great and I can run my amp hot and not rip peoples heads off. I only use the shield. Never had a use for the sorber.
