never knew the Plexi Palace guys...I don't think? I got my gear mostly from Whittier Music and that area...Gtr center didn't exist then...(at least I didn't know about it...)...I play lots of different styles but the QR makes me wanna play more to VH and purcussive chops...I don't have any carple tunnel probs yet maybe it's because I'm left handed overall but play guitar right handed...this gives me unique advantages and disadvantages...my email is: baxterfamily@hotmail.com send me a quick email and I will email you a 2 minute noodle/solo thing I did this morning off the cuff (mp3).. Man, we have something in common. I am left handed, yet I learned to play right handed. Too me, there is only onle right way........right handed. I just thought a left handed guitar looked wierd! LOL

you don't think there's alot of difference between first and second gears?? I don't feel the same way..i think the two are almost like nigth and day.. and I think there's plenty of difference between second and third gear (at the same gain levels, mind you) to make them different from one another, sonically... that's just me though... I love third gear =) 1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear....there just isn't that much difference between 2nd and 3rd gear. When I switch between 2nd and 3rd I can BARELY tell a SLIGHT gain increase SLIGHT....the sound is a little 'bigger' in 3rd gear, 2nd gear will cut a little better, first gear is lower gain but still modded Marshall, slightly 'barky' vibe AC/DC-Zep etc...I knew George Lynch and hung with him in the late 70's early 80's (my Band was 'ArchRival' his was 'AirBorne' and then later 'Xciter' before joining Dokken) we used to go out and get old Marshall 50 watters (73' or earlier ONLY!!!) for about $400 out of the Recycler newspaper (musician's gear rag...) bring em' back to his practice studio in Buena Park CA and crank em, everything on ten! play Judas Priest riffs etc...(George was a HUGE JP fan then) if the amp had no 'sack' we would open it up and George would solder a diode or 2 across the output tubes (clip job someone showed him how to do..) and we would try it again (the early Marshalls had hand wound trannys and each would respond different...) if it rocked we would fight over who gets to keep it...if it BARKED we took the diodes off and re-sold it in the recycler paper. Both George and I play a 'lighter touch' lagato style that requires more tube saturation (we can pick fast but prefer smooth) only difference is George would 'fan' his 3 picking hand fingers out straight as he rested his right hand on the bridge of the guitar, mine are more relaxed in the same position...ALL THIS TO SAY....to each his own gear! it depends soley on YOUR playing style as to whether you would want or NEED 3rd gear (I have it and like having it as an option, though stay mainly in 2nd gear...) I use a Fulltone OCD pedal to get the major saturation I like when I play super fast legato solos...I turn the OCD off when I need a more 'purcussive' feel to the notes. first, great story! second, i remember being a kid (and a HUGE LYNCH fan) and seeing that fan motion for the first time and trying to copy it...i couldn't do it....ha! third, this is what i'm trying to find out about third gear...if the difference between third and second is the same as second and first then there isn't much of a difference (at least to my ears)... fourth, can i start a thread and just have ya tell us stories about you and lynch (...ha!...just kidding...well, not really ;D)

wow...as I said, at the same gain setting I can definetly hear a vast difference between teh two..second gear's spongier with more low end and gain than first gear..first gear's more bitey with added high end....
that's just how it sounds to me anyway =)

I find a tad more bass going from 1st gear to 2nd...and I definitely find more sponginess when I kick in OD2 when I'm on 2nd gear. I don't have a 3rd gear, and as I stated in earlier posts, wouldn't require it in my current band. I find that at practice and gig levels, I often keep notching the gain back more and more primarily because my other guitar player uses a 5150. His gain is very compressed (and he has a LOT of gain) so I like to sound more dynamic. I found that when I increased the gain on my amp to match him, we sounded too "hi-fi". When I decreased my gain, we sound HUGE!!!
That's what's cool about the QR, it sounds good regardless of where you run the gain...it's all about personal preference.

I definetly find myself going towards either third gear wiht the gain dialed in lower or first gear with the gain dialed in a little higher....to my ear, I prefer them to second gear..not that I don't like second gear..there's just something about those two that I dig more! first gear's a ton of fun to noodle around on...it's very clear and articulate..which I love =)

The more I think about it, the more I'm digging 1st gear, too. I think the reason I like a little more bass (2nd gear) is to put my bass player in his place from time to time ;-) He likes to "drift" his EQ towards the guitar frequencies...but with my Splawn, I can quickly remind him that I won't be stepped on.

LOL....why is it that bassplayers complain that they can't hear themselves?? they never realize that bass is NON DIRECTIONAL! translated: it sounds the same every friggin' place you go on the stage!!! unlike guitar frequencies....usually all our problems as guitar players stem from tryin' to bust through their damn wall of sound =)

my problem is that my drummer is such a freakin girl that he is ALWAYS complaining about the volume...i mean, we don't really play that loud...not any louder than any bar band and the stage level is pretty quiet because i mic my amp through the p.a. and use that as a monitor for me....so now, inorder to hear my guitar during solos i literally stand out infront of the p.a. mains so i can hear what i'd doing...
this problem will be solved in about 2 weeks...ive had offers to join 2 other "bigger" bands than us so i'm leaving...or completely reforming my band (our issues go way deeper than volume levels honestly)
