I may be selling or trading my Nitro. Just got it back from Scott and he did a complete retube. Removed a mod. Upgraded to 2010 specs and put it in a plexi style black box with silver piping. It has a black face and chicken knobs. It looks great but I am not so sure I dig the Nitro as much as I thought I would. Maybe I should have gotten a QR. Still not sure yet.

All those sound very good. Is this head that picky with what speakersit needs? My biggest problem is the unruly low end but I saw where someone posted that it is based on 12 oclock eq settings and when I did this it did get better but still a bit much on the low end. I am running a well built Carvin cab with Celestion 70th ann. with I believe Scott has a version of that he calls a bigblock. The other 2 speakers are Eminence Wizards with are versions of the 70th. So basically 4 bigblocks. Is that the root of my lowend issues. Or is the Carvin stereo cab that I run in mono designed to produce more lowend. I do have a Marshall slant cab I can put those speakers in. Will that help?

Interesting.
I would not have imagined that setup to be "too boomy", you do however, have a setup that will produce a lot of low frequencies. If it is too much, you should have better results with a 75 or 80hz speaker, all 4 or 2 mixed in. The Splawn speaker does not respond EXACTLY like Celestion or its similar speakers, even though some of the specs are the same.
good luck!

Well at the time I was freaking out because something wasn't right. There was a mod on the amp that he removed. He said he would do the upgrade but to be honest I don't know if he actually remembered to do it. I really need to ask. I just assumed he did but that was 2 months ago. If he did may be he offered because we thought there might be a transformer problem. Turned out to be nothing so maybe it didn't get done.

Took it to a local store that had a straight Splawn with sb and bb. It was a crappy morning so I was not surprised to see the Splawn 4x12 gone when I got there lol. So I tried it out on an Egnater 2x12 thinking less boom and have to admit it was much better even with the v30. I think it is a combination of my cabs, me being a new user and me not digging the Nitro as much. After listening to some clips I think I like the QR better.

I felt the same way after getting my Nitro. After playing around with some tubes and surrendering to the fact that the resonance knob must be turned off I'm very happy with it. I use a Splawn 4x12 with SB's and active pups. So far this one amp is the only one I have found that can replicate James Hetfields live tone just by plugging straight in with the loop bypassed.

Well I ran it into both of my 1x12 Blackstars with Celetion seventy 80s and it was MUCH better. I was actually digging it. I ran into an Egnater 2x12 yesterday and it was better but just ok because of the v30s but it was alot better than my 4x12s. It sounded great on the Blackstars. I am thinking the right speakers and a smaller box that does not produce alot of lowend will be the ticket. Wish I still had my Orange 2x12. Could have loaded it with GB or SB. Plus I like the idea of smaller and lighter.

Scott loaded it with the chinese tubes. Could changing around with other brands of preamp tubes lessen the lowend or will that mostly affect the gain structure which could help too I suppose.

Rock this thing does like active pups. I noticed the difference with smoother bottom end.

So a few trades fell through so I went downstairs and hooked her up again to play around. I dont now why all of a sudden this thing sounds much better. I did stop eq'ing with my eyes based on almost every other amp I ever had. I found a straight 4x12 white Splawn in town and have a buddy who works at the shop. Took a shot and bought it. I have been wanting a straight cab anyway and I got it for only 250 in pretty decent shape. I am floored at the difference. This thing likes my EMG guitars. I was able to add a little bottom end. Now the ice pick highs are gone too. Cranked the mids since this is voiced so bottom heavy and man this Nitro is roaring. Real glad the way things turned out.

The real reason Scott sells his own speaker revealed again! lol
Happy Splawning!

Yeah I actually got it sounding pretty good with my Carvin loaded with 70th ann Celestions which I believe are referred to as bigblocks. I only got the Splawn cab this afternoon. Now the Splawn bends my Blackstar over and has its way with it. So much so that I feel the Blackstar is not a worthy backup now.

My Nitro sounded meh to me through Mesa Black Shadows. I just loaded a Mesa cab with WGS Retro 30s and I tried that at a rehearsal and it was so ice picky my bass player put in ear plugs. It took me awhile to dial in correctly with V30s but when I finally got it there it was good. The SB is where the magic is to my ears though. No matter what your preference I think its an agreed truth on this forum that Splawns are selective about speakers. I also like Ruby el34s in my Nitro. Tungsols in the preamp and a ruby in v1. Check with Laura ( aka www.valvequeen.com ) about tube suggestions. My Nitro was not as good to my ears with Tungsol or the chinese power tubes. The rubys are great IMO. Oh....and boost that amp with an Xotic BB or a Flying Dragon pedal. Total win....again IMO.

I have heard the Rubys are a favorite. I may order a quad. I may mess with the pres too but for right now I am digging it. Res off, Pres @ 9 oclock, Bass between 9 & 10, Mids @ 3 and highs @ noon. Gain between 10 and 11. I have never ever run a boost on the amp. ot opposed to trying though. Do you leave it on all the time or just for solos? Right now I am using a Boss overdrive.
