Camsdad your posts of info are always extra extra detailed for the inexperienced! Great work and alot of patience! Much appreciated around here I'm sure. You should patent this plug and make millions because there are alot of amps out there that you have to do the same! For Ayton and I, we have less cables to buy as we have only 2 EL34 to bias! I can't wait for my biaspro to arrive and retube as my comp is sounding dark and loose lately! The guy shipped it USPS first class which can possibly take from 1 week to 3 weeks he said to Canada. Hopefully it gets here in 1.5 weeks which is what normal USPS takes to get here from my previous ebay purchases or sooner.

Really appreciating the antipodean step-by-step on the Splawn butt plug. Thank you for taking the time to lay all that out. Makes total sense of course, now that I see it. Though you can bet my hole will be off just enough to be annoying. ^_^
Briman: what am I missing if I don't buy the plate voltage cable? And what tubes are you trying in your Comp? I'm between JJs and Winged Cs.

I have 2 sets. One are JJ's and the other are electro harmonix. I will try the JJ's first and let you know how they sound. Won't be until next week roughly as my biaspro is on the way from the US to here in Canada so probably another 7 days or so. From what I understand, you need the cables to read plate voltage in order to calculate how hot you should bias. Here's the calculation you need to do from Spawndude's bias tutorial in the FAQ section. Note that this is his plate voltage of 475. He biased it at 60% which is on the cooler side. Max you should go is 70% roughly.
25 watts per tube / 475 plate voltage = .052 amps so 52 mA x .60 plate dissipation = .031 or 31 mA
bias amp to 31 mA to start

Drat. He makes it sound sort of optional. I've played 23 years and this stuff has always seemed like alchemy. Those new Marshall signature amps with the "hold two buttons to bias — okay, it's done!" feature sound pretty attractive right now.

Yeah it is kinda optional as long as your in the right ball park for your amps plate voltage. It's just to maximize tube life. If you stay between 25 to 32ma without getting your plate voltage reading you'll be fine. I had a DSL50 and it had the bias pots right next to the tube with posts to connect your multimeter to. After I do Camsdad's mod....... my splawn will be that easy to bias also but it will sound 100 times better!!!
