Anybody ever deal with this guy? Apparently he does some mods to each channel of a splawn.
I wasn't super blown away by his YouTube clips on a nitro but that couldve just been the YouTube crap audio problem.
Just curious if anyone's played a splawn that he's worked on, or if anyone else has had their splawn modded?

Man, if I ever go to Canada I'm going to hit this guy. I like some of those vids, but not so much the Nitro one.

What mod does a Nitro possibly need ? Altering the volume taper is all I could want and thats not an FJA option anyway.

I haven't had a chance to talk with Jerry yet about what he's doing to Splawns but I do know him to be a stand-up guy. I visited his shop in NY a few years ago, and he does indeed perform some quality work. I actually saw him take a cheap garbage Peavey tube amp (forgot what it was called, a Windsor maybe...it was about a $400 tube amp) and turn it into an extremely commendable sounding amp.

From Jerry, this morning.
I usually make the clean channel even clean and more Fender like. I can do many things with the gain channel. I can increase or lower gain, change the goofy mid voicing, give the amp more saturation, etc.
I don't think more saturation would hurt the nitro. I think it could use a little more gain, as long as it retains the warmth and tonal character of the stock nitro.

I can see Scott rolling his eyes when he reads about his "goofy" mid voicing.
That being said.... I'd love more saturation but I could not bring myself to mod my Nitro. It is what it is and its not perfect but I like it bad volume taper and all.

I would like to mod the Rod to get a more glassy and full clean, and much more saturation. Keep gears 1 and 2 just how they are, but get WAY more saturation and different mid voicing on gear 3!!!!! Hells yeahs!

Thanks for making some rockin amps! I think the nitro could use more gain. The tone is deep and, well, for me, perfect. But I just feel like it could be more saturated.
My two cents.

Josh, thanks for taking the time to listen to us "board members." You guys build awesome amps and your customer service rules! That being said, I've tried all the tricks suggested on this board, and I am nowhere near happy with my cleans.

Ok,
since you're listening. Give the volumes more taper/travel so it can be adjusted easier, the clean channel is "good enough" (make this available as a mod on the older models too! :- ) )
Maybe you could start a "custom shop" option where little tweaks are available, I can only imagine the waitlist...
Hire a couple more assemblers?
My QR eats other amps for lunch, but it is tricky to set the volume.
Thanks!

My friend owns this amp.... Super Comp with Nick Mod. Says its the best amp he's ever owned and he's owned them all. Just sold his 2010 Nitro and QR too. I haven't played it yet, but looking forward to it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX6o77C7w10

the FJA mods don't impress me . I have never heard anything from him that I would want done to my amps . IMHO having FJA mod a Splawn is like having Volkswagen mod your Mercedes

I think the problem everyone is having is the lack of upper mids that are much needed for cut and clarity in a live and studio mix. When people (I am guilty also) hear that an amp is more modern sounding or voiced they jump at it with a monstrous cutting tone in mind. What happens is most people that play modern rock/metal don't play in the standard tuning the amp was voiced for. What happens is the tightness and mid bark of that amp that was present in standard tuning is lost due to artists/players tuned down a full step or lower to get a heavy growl out of their tone. Lower tuning also opens the door to have a slight chance to sound a little different even though the same notes exist on the fretboard in different locations. Nothing wrong with standard. I play in it at my church when I lead worship on an occasion (I actually use drop D standard when playing electric). Anyhow the reason amps get modded for the most part from what I have seen recently is to get the proper midrange bark/cut that the amp had in standard back even though they are tuned down. When amp shopping now I look for amps that have very strong mids/upper mids in standard or ones that trusted players say that the amp needed less mid/upper mids. That is an amp that would do well using drop tuning. Make sense? I grew weary of amp disappointments when I knew in the back of my mind that ALL amps are voiced using a guitar in standard tuning. So to answer the question why mod a Nitro? Simple. The owner wanted a different voicing. Do I think it is right? Well he or she bought the amp. They own it and can do whatever they want with it. Should they mod it. Sure why not. It is still a Splawn. FJA don't take the Splawn logo off and replace it with FJA. If the amp sounds better modded to that person then great! It will still be another Splawn on a stage or in a studio being used and spreading the word. People having them modded may give Scott an idea for a new amp voicing. Hint Hint. Maybe an amp geared towards players who use drop tunings maybe? I'm hard pressed to find a modern band that plays in standard these days. My 2 cents.

If your listening.. DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ON THE QUICK ROD. Two thumbs down on the FJA mod.
