Are we saying the JB and BBQ are similar? They don't sound it to me. I've had two new guitars with JBs this year and in each case could only stand that pup a week or so before removing it. Too spiky, nasal, aggravated, hot. The BBQ has a much more interesting sound for my money, so much going on in the mids, it practically talks, and I love the way it reacts dynamically. The JB for me is really one-notey, like a v30 in pickup form.
JB is ~16.8k, BBQ is ~12.5k.

I hear you on the DC resistance (my 7k Alnico II Pro should sound like a mouse, but it really does bring the Appetite for Destruction toanz) and I know it's imperfect, but in this case I think it does indicate the difference between the two. The JB feels madly overwound and unwilling to have dynamics coaxed out of it, while the BBQ seems balanced and tuned in to variations in your playing, but I know you are all about teh rage, and a JB will at least take you further in that magical 1st Gear than Scotts gain knob will go.
Horses for courses and all that, I was just surprised to hear them compared. I'd swap my pulled JBs for BBQs in a minute!

I guess in reality a BBQ would be more like a PAF type of pickup...not really hot rodded like a JB or a distortion... I'd try one again...But I don't wanna go through the hassle of swapping, trying, swapping, bah!

Yeah, I love the trying part, but soldering is such a hassle. That new Charvel had five wires all earthed on the same 3mm tab. Torture, adding a new pup and trying to put all those back in place on that tiny lug. It's amazing, 60 years on, how there's no plug-and-play standard for pickup installation. The SD Liberator announced just recently looks like a step in the right direction.
What guitar did you try the BBQ in? I ask because mine only came to life when I hooked it to a single 500k pot and no tone control. It was subdued in the same guitar with 250s and a tone.

So are you guys not finding the BBQ hot enough for you? I like the JB, I play a lot of TOOL. It does AJ's tone well with a quickrod and a les paul. But I do feel like the sound is constrained sometimes, and lacks some dynamics. Will the BBQ even everything else out and I'll just have to be a little more aware of the gain knob? Or are they different ballparks and sounds all together.

Not us guys, just S75! The BBQ is plenty hot enough for me. And Craig, and gadzz, and, oh, Scott Splawn. ;D
I wouldn't know which would be better for Tool.

I would really like to try that 59 Custom hybrid they invented over at the SD forum. They take one bobbin off a Custom 5 and one off a 59 then tape it all up. I think it would really rip, but those bobbin connections are f'n tiny for soldering. Everyone seems to love it, though.

Would you gheys say that the BBQ is mostly great for 80’s butt rock? I have the JB/59 in my Edwards and I would like to replace it someday. It definitely pushes the amp more but sounds a little too mid honky for me. Does the BBQ do ok on cleaner mid gain tones? Damn, I've been using the JB for quiet sometime now. I want something different. There is way too many people in a shop somewhere hand winding amazing pickups for me to play a JB. I love it, It's a standard in the pickup industry. But is the BBQ work getting if the JB is comprable and similar? I'd rather have the high mids aswell. I play a lot of TOOL type music, so it's real mid heavy. That’s kind of how I feel about it too. I was looking into Brian Gunsher p-ups for a while. They seem to get good praise for the price
