I bought a used Nitro last week and it got here a few days ago....This is the second one I have owned so far. The first one I had I sold to fastredponycar, as you might know he happened to like the amp more than I did. The first one I had was running KT77's and I am realizing now that what I didnt like was mostly the tubes. The first one I had sounded ok,... I didnt like it at all at home. When I tried it with my band I thought it sounded pretty good. The mids bothered me though. It sat so low in the mix that I didnt think I was gonna hang with it. So I ended up selling it and wondering if it would have sounded better with other tubes.
The one I have now has KT88's and it sounds really good at home..... Its loud as all hell but it sounds good. Its really mean, thick and clear sounding. Im gonna try it with the band soon and see how it does. The one I have does not have the loop volume. I can already tell it would be more controllable with the loop volume but its not terrible as is. Maybe I will just buy a volume pedal ? ....... I'm noticing now that the Resonance function is a lot different from most other amps. With it all the way down the amp sounds more open, tighter and brighter.... With it all the way up the amp sounds more compressed, darker and a touch looser. Im not positive about how am going to set things but Im getting more used to the amp now. Seems like I can get more mids that would cut if I set the mids high like around 2oclock and the treble down low like 10-11oclock...... Any tips ?

Cool.... The Nitro's eq is very usable throughout the full sweep from 0-10 on most of the controls. It seems like its one of those amps you have to try settings you wouldnt normally on other heads. At the moment I like the Resonance all the way up but thats going through a Vht cab. Im thinkin about putting some Heritage Greenbacks in a splawn cab I have. Ive been wanting to try those speakers for a while and it sounds to me like the Nitro might go great with them but who knows its always a crap shot with speakers.

Awesome, it's my second time around with the Nitro but I only waited 24 hrs before buying a '10 replacement.. ;D Recieved it Thursday and was instantly hooked and don't why I sold my other one. It was a good move and time for an upgrade anyway.
I gigged with the new Nitro for the 1st time last night and it was awesome, very percussive!
As far as settings are concerned I'm constantly turning knobs searching for new tones. I don't know what's going on when you turn the treble all the way down but it changes things a lot.

I'm with Lewis. Constantly turning knobs is a necessity due to the different rooms and venues we all play. Unless, of course, you stay home all the time, or use it as a tool in your studio that doesn't get moved around?.....I believe the best method is to start @ 12 o'clock on all settings and adjust from there.....but all these Splawn amps are VERY sensitive to the types of speaker cabs you use. It can be smokin', or horrific!

yeah man the 77's are awful tubes IMO. I had 2 different sets of the JJ's KT77's and hated both of them. KT88's are THE tubes for the nitro. I also like the ruby HG preamp tubes best. Laura's got them here www.valvequeen.comPro tips: Buy a volume pedal NAO! The amp is useless to me without a volume pedal. Seriously... it's just SO loud without one. The tone that is in the amp that emerges when the volume knob hits about 9 o'clock is redonkulous. A regular ernie ball jr passive volume pedal will let you have that at "don't wake up the wife/kids/neighbors" volume. Also, a good boost will really take the amp into a sonic territory that no EQ in the loop or speaker swap can get. The best boost I've ever heard in the amp is a JHS klon clone. Mine will hopefully be built in a few weeks but for now, I'm using a (out of production) eden analog austin overdrive. any tube screamer type overdrive that nudges the mids at that 1Khz frequency pretty much yields the Appetite for Destruction tone if you're after that. And you're right about the resonance knob. It's a very powerful shaping feature. I usually run mine around 10~12 o'clock but if you're doing the tight chugging palm mutes, drop it down to zero and the amp immediately has that clean, clear percussive thwack to the note attack. The speakers of choice for me is a Scumback 100 watt H75LHDC and a celestion K100. Give it some more time, play it through different cabs with different speakers (that will make or break the amp also)... I can't afford to buy another one

I got a nitro a few months ago based on fastredponycar's youtube clips and I'd never get rid of it for the world. I finally got it up and running with my TC G-system. I'm considering a second head for leads, my OD tone is a bit dark. I'm thinking of either a second nitro or the single channel nitro version (super comp?) or perhaps a totally different head (maybe a QR?) but I may just put brighter gain pedal in front of the nitro's clean channel instead. Thoughts about that?
Also, I'm playing it through the world's worst speaker cab now. I want a splawn 2x12 but I got the KT88 version of the nitro so its 120 watts. I don't know enough about audio to know what speaker limitations the head puts on my speaker purchase. Any help would be great.

you could just run the nitro at half power and use pretty much anything cus most support at least 60 watts

A boost makes all the difference with the Nitro. It sounds incredible with a good boost and KT88's.

A boost makes all the difference with the Nitro. It sounds incredible with a good boost and KT88's. i second this. Unboosted my nitro has a slightly darker bassier tone to it thats not quite as tight as when i use a maxon 808 boost in front. As soon as I hit that pedal it just immediately tightens up the low end and adds just a dash of some mid freq. that just makes everything sound better without coloring your tone. The nitro w/ a boost is simply awesome.

on my second go round with the Nitro too, and I'm really liking the new one. Had to revisit it after hearing so many of Drew's killer clips. My old one had KT77's, and I greatly prefer the new one with KT88 this time around. Tons of percussive tight lowend, with super articulate fast tracking and just the right amount of sag. The midrange character seems a little different with KT88 too. There was something I just didn't dig about the KT77 in my old one, where it almost sounded a bit "cardboardy" to me in the mids, for lack of a better term. I'm really liking what I'm hearing with KT88 however. This new one seems quite a bit quieter too as far as extraneous noise, so either my tubes were funky before, or the new ones have something improved. Diggin it a lot with a BB preamp boosting it, even thru my V30 x K100 cab, which it seems most people don't like with the Nitro.
Haven't tried using the loop vol yet, as I've been going straight in and loud, but I'm assuming it works like having a vol pedal in the loop?

Hey Erock whats shakin man ? Yeah the first Nitro I had also had the Kt77's,.... I also didnt like the way the mids were with those tubes. The one I have now with KT88's sounds great and I really like it through my Mesa Stiletto cab with v30's so go figure. I think v30's sound great with the nitro.

ksefan - haven't yet, but plan to, just been super busy lately. Drew's clips really portray the amp nicely though, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to do it justice. I am really excited to get it back as a recording amp though, always dug how this amp tracks. Mark - hey bro, what's happening. Been ok, just super busy. Glad to hear you're liking the Nitro, I'm pretty surprised I'm getting along so well with it the second time around myself. I had forgotten how much fun that punishing lowend could be, and the KT88 really take it to another level. I'm really liking my V30 x K100 cab with it too, super tight and some crazy articulation. My speakers are well broke in at this point though, so maybe that helps. It seems like it took forever for those K100 to loosen up. I'm having a lot of fun with the combination. Laura - How's it going! Long time no talk, hope all is well with you and the family. Good to see your business is taking off too, can't wait to order some goodies from you.
