Hey there, I want to boost my nitro to get some extra bite and tightness and was wondering what od pedals were you using, if you do use, and what settings do you use with your pedals, again if you DO use one. Thanks. ;D

No offense but I don't get it. I've seen peolple post about using a boost on their Nitro before and don't understand why. My Nitro is so hot it could sear a 5lb T-bone in minutes. ;D here's a quote that pretty much sums it up: the nitro's one pissed off amp

I boost my nitro with an Analogman JYM308 DOD pedal. It's not your usual overdrive. It sounds a little fuzzy when chording but when I take a solo the pedal delivers. I use it sparingly but I do use it.
I also use an Analogman KOT. I set it as a clean boost to get a little more tightness out of the amp. I cannot push my Nitro loud even at club level so I rarely get the tubes really cooking. At louder volumes I would not boost as much but for my club gigs I prefer a boost on the board.

Maxon OD-808 for the win!! i LOVE the way mine sounds with it,adds more bite and pushes the gain up a little without coloring the tone too much. i run mine wide open on the level and at 8:00 on the gain and the tone set at 3:00 and it barks like a pi$$ed off pitbull! i have the gain on my nitro set at 3:00-3:30 by the way.

I've tried one of those and didn't really care for it. It does tighten up the tone, but not as good as running an EQ pedal in the loop and shaping the preamp rather than boosting the front of the preamp. You can boost the preamp shape with the level fader on the EQ pedal. No tone coloration using the EQ. I have also tried a Keeley clean boost pedal and still prefered the EQ. I mostly concentrate on getting the best recorded tone though, so for live applications a clean boost may do the trick for what you are looking for. I don't use a boost live and don't really see the point with a Nitro. I also only run the gain at just past noon.

the od808 adds something to the tone of the nitro which i can only describe as adding depth to the "background of the tone"
I have my gain set at about 1 o' clock with the od808 maxed out on the balance and the OD turned off, and I pretty much have nailed Killswitch Engages guitar tone ala The End of Heartache and As Daylight Dies. With a dropped C tuned guitar the amp just growls with authority and has a nice tight chunky low end.

I guess if I was trying to emulate the KSE sound I would use the 808. I try to be different, but still have good tone. An EQ in the loop and a BBE sonic stomp is where it's at for me. I sold my 808 and Keeley.

whats funny though?
if a do a quick adjustment on the amp and grab my JP6, I can get pretty close to a nice fluid dream theater lead tone as well. Very versatile for being such a simple layout. Im even one of those people that think the clean channel is great.
Scott did a great job building these amps. I just bought a Mesa Mark V as a 2nd amp which i am promptly returning because its requiring way too much tweaking to get a useable sound. You just shouldnt have to invest a couple of weeks into one amp to get a good tone. I had good sounds coming outta the splawn after the first day.

The nitro has good amounts of gain but a good overdrive pedal can add a TON of versatility to the amp. I use a couple of overdrives with mine depending on what the song calls for. I use both a version 4 OCD pedal as well as an eden analog austin overdrive (tweaked tube screamer) and each serves a very necessary purpose both live and in the studio.
I can set the gain low on the od channel and use the amp for lower gain AC/DC type stuff and then kick one one of the boosts to provide a different overall demeanor from the amp than simply kicking on OD 2 would offer.
Both Od pedals tighten up the gain and low end in a certain way that can be desirable for certain things.. not to mention tossing one (or layering both) onto the amp' clean channel can take the amp into another totally different direction.
Dismissing OD pedals simply because the amp is already high gain is overlooking a LOT of different tones that the amp can bring to the table.

Thanks for your responses guys, I'll probably be going with a maxon od808 but I was wondering if getting a keeley modded ts8 would be a better idea? Is there much of a difference in keeley modded ods and stock ones?

^I use (sparingly) a Keeley TS9DX w/my QR. I do like it, but it's not exactly what I had hoped for. Still has that Tube Screamer mid-hump thing going on that I'm not real fond of, and feel the QR doesn't need in the OD channel. I've pretty much relegated it to being used with the clean channel to get a bluesy type sound, and as a lower volume boost in the gain channel when I need a little something more, but not quite lead volume. I've heard the Maxon OD808's don't have that mid-hump. I've never tried one so I can't say first hand. I've also heard some of the modded 808's are pretty good sounding. I think Outlier (on this forum) mod's either the 808 or another OD pedal that a lot of the guys on this forum really like.

Outlier mods the DOD Jym308 pedal I believe. I have an Analogman modded one. Awesome for shred/soloing but not my favorite pedal for chording. Its better for single note playing for me.
I fall in and out of love with my TS9. mine is also an Analogman modded pedal and I had a "bad" boost mod done to it last year. Some days I love TS9's and some days I cannot put it back in its box fast enough.

i know the od808 is the way to go, but I just got a wylde overdrive for free...anybody use one? Is it even worth it or do I just put in the box of pedals i don't use? My rig is at the practice space. Next time i'm down there I'll try it out but I was hoping someone had already tried it and had an opinion on it
