Just got my unloaded cab in yesterday in record time! Less than two weeks! ;D Anyhow it is probably one of the nicest cabs I have purchased. I'm going to put Celestion G12K100's in it. The only thing I don't like about the cab is.................................. IT WAS SHIPPED THROUGH FEDEX! I have yet to receive anything from them.......I mean anything.....even a FedEx envelope containing concert tickets that hasn't been damaged or completely destroyed by them. When I got home I was excited to see the giant Splawn box sitting in the garage. I was not excited to see the huge gash in the side of the box. I knew without looking the cab was going to have some sort of damage. I was right. The front corner has a dent in the wood and a gash in the tolex. You pay $65 bucks to have a nice item shipped via FedEx and this is what you get. My Quick Rod was also either thrown or dropped by them and the headshell joints were cracked. My Nitro however is in perfect condition. Why? Because I picked it up from the man himself in person. Sorry to ramble, but I'm sure you guys understand I need to vent. It should be a felony in the State of Florida for FedEx to damage Splawn equipment. I bet then they would stop jacking up the equipment I have paid good money for when I inspect my purchase and then put cuffs on them for the damage! It's nice to dream I guess. I'll post some pics later today on this post.

What exactly is the proper procedure for dealing with damage like this through FedEx anyway? To refuse shipment? To refuse to sign for the shipment until you can open the box to see the damage? To make note of any damage to the box on the FedEx ticket before you sign?
I've never had anything bad happen before but I'm sure it's only a matter of time...

Shipping is such a gamble. Most guys here know that FedEx destroyed my first Competition, then stuffed all the bits into a clean new box to cover it up until I'd accepted it.
You should pursue them for the insurance. That cab is worth less than it would be without their damage.
I think delivery guys hate heavy/bulky items and treat them with disdain.

I got my head and cab in perfect condition and they were shipped overseas, most of the bad stuff I read is usually about UPS, so what's your other choices really besides local pickup? USPS? How do they handle parcels? BTW in case of damage do you get the full insurance value? As in how much you paid for the cab?

The reason I'm asking about proper procedure is not just for everybody's general knowledge, but because I too am receiving a 4x12 cab in about a week via FedEx. So if it shows up with clear damage to the box that looks severe enough to have caused damage to the cab, then I'd like to know in advance what the best courses of actions are BEFORE I sign anything and let the driver go on his merry way with the delivery receipt.

I think you are meant to perform a citizen's arrest. But the Geneva convention prohibits stubbing out cigarettes on him until the matter is concluded.

I wasn't home when they brought it and my wife signed for it. Of course she doesn't know to inspect the box, but I did tell her to call me if the box is destroyed. The box had a gash in one of the sides and I knew that there would be some type of damage. The damage to the cab isn't that bad and isn't very noticable after I did surgery to fix it. There is a slight dent in the corner. The tolex is glued back down. It looks like they either dropped it on the edge of the truck while loading it or something. I have had two Randall loaded cabs delivered via UPS with no issues. They actually strapped them to dollys and were transported with the dollys attached from Illinios till they got to my house (pretty cool). Randall does pack the cab a little differently with that expandable foam stuff I think it is called insta pack. Anyhow it doesn't matter if it was shipped in a plain box with no padding. It should not be damaged. USPS won't ship large items I have been told. No problems with them either. Fed Ex just plain sucks. They even messed up tickets I purchased about a year ago and I had to beg the broker to issue two new tickets since FedEx destroyed the ones in an envelope! Filing a claim with Fed Ex is a joke. My two Tungsol 12AX7s that were attached to the outside of the cab survived. The boxed they came in were smashed. Did I mention FedEx sucks?

That scares the crap out of me dude! I just got the email saying they shipped my cabinet out! If it comes in jacked up.... I might cry. It would break my heart.

That's a real downer. Sorry to hear.
Scott and co should REALLY use the Insta Pack foam application for their amps. I've never seen/heard of a manufacturer having so many consistent issues with cracking head shells and damaged merch in transit. And, it's the same stuff w/the same issues/damage. I'd rather pay a bit more to make sure my new toy arrived 'new' - nothing like waiting on a piece of gear (or anything) and find it trashed when you open the box).
If I don't double-box (float one box on peanuts inside another) I have UPS do the Insta-pack.

Two key items from the FedEx site:
1) "We (FedEx) must receive notice of a claim due to damage (visible or concealed) within 21 calendar days after delivery of the shipment."
2) "Except in the case of concealed damage, receipt of the shipment by the recipient without written notice of damage on the airbill is prima facie evidence that the shipment was delivered in good condition."
So basically, inspect the box upon delivery and if there's any indication of damage that appears severe enough to have damaged the contents, then be sure to note that on the airbill.
