I have KT77's and EL34B's in my Nitro's. Has anyone tried KT88's/6550's? If so, what did you think? I am curious.

I have a KT77 Nitro. Just installed the Shuguang 9th generation pre's and it flat out destroys. Just ordered another Nitro with Tung Sol el34b's and have a set of shug pre's waiting for it. Does anyone here have the Tung Sol's? How do they sound compared to the JJ KT77? Also, i've ordered a 4x12 w/sb25's and a 2x12 w/private jacks. (all of the above black with red racing stripes just to rub it in) I really suck at guitar but look cool doing it.

The overall tone of the Tung Sol EL34B's is better and brighter but I like the JJKT77's warmth and darkness also. I am pretty sure I am going to get KT88's in one of the amps.

I had the Tung Sol EL34s in my Nitro and switched to the JJ KT-77s and wont be going back to the EL34s. The KT77s provide that lowend tightness that the EL34s dont have. The Tung Sol sounded good but were lacking something the KT77s have and do very well at while still providing excellent tone.
overall tone is more aggressive, tighter and in your face even more. I have RI Mullard 12ax7s in V2 and V3... and a 9th Gen 12ax7 chinese in the V4 socket. Couldnt be happier with this tubes mix.

I need to try a Mullard or 2. I have Chinese in V1 and V2 now and JJ in V3. Still experimenting with V4.
I keep going back to the JJKT77's. Again, I think the EL34B's have a sweeter tone but there is something about the JJ's that I like more. Tighter low end and smoother mids IMO. I really want to try KT88's. May go JJ's on this also. I was looking at the Tung Sol 6550's which I like a lot but I really like JJ power tubes for some reason...they just seem thicker and smoother to me...

I found that the EL 34 Shugs I have are just as tight as the KT77's I had, but have more punch and bite. They break up about the same. I have tried two sets of STRs in it Russians and Rubys. The Rubys are supposed to be a Special Tube Request from the Shuguang factory. They didn't sound as good as the generic Shugs I have in it now. I only tried a pair of Rubys, but didn't care for them. I was going to try some Tung Sols, but I'm happy with the Shugs ($40 for a matched quad). My wallet likes them also \m/ (- -) \m/.

Hey, does anyone know which two tubes run when you switch to half power? I just discovered two microphonic tubes in my Nitro (kt77's). I have a gig this weekend and will not be able to get them replaced before then. I figured I could just drop to half power and move the two good tubes to the proper sockets. Will this be okay?

If I remember correctly.. I was talking to Scott about that and he said that the 2 middle power tubes are used for 1/2 power. But give him a shout to double check and be sure.

Mullard in V1 sounds really good. Got my Kt88's in today. Waiting for my bias rite to ship. Those Kt88's look beastly. I figure if the Kt77's sound good to my ears, then the JJKT88's are gonna bring the sonic boom!

i really like the jj kt-88s in my nitro but...the low end is a little more loose than i like so i am going back to old reliable tung sol 6550s. i just LOVE the punchy "THWACK!!" it gave the low end in my pro mod so it should rip in my nitro.

Yeah, those are great tubes also. If I don't like the JJ's, I have some of those to try out also.

Don't you have to mod your amp to be able to use KT88s?

Don't you have to mod your amp to be able to use KT88s? Yes, you have to add a resistor.
