from what i can tell the quick rod and the pro mod are the same amp...except one runs el34s and the other one runs kt88s...one doesn't have any more gain than the other one or more features than the other one...

yeah, they even have the same transformer now, right?
I was just sayin' that now that they have the 3rd gear mod it's capable of more gain than anything we've heard recorded yet =0)
now I had a thought...no reason why you couldn't have a tech rebias it and put kt88's in the QR later on down the line, right? not to say that I WANT to do that or anything....it's just a random thought that entered my mind

I think the QR looked better with the pinstripe. If they are the same amp Maybe I will just get the PM. I thought the transformers are somewhat optimized for the power tube types. I know some companies like Rivera do that to where you can run other tubes but it sounds the best with those particular ones that it was made for.

I can't wait for al estrada to record some clips with his new QR =) with the third gear mod.... I'm not sure how the transformers enter in to all of this..but I'm sure scott uses the same one in both amps for a reason

The transformers change the tone in many ways. The Pro Mod is going to have a more modern tone because of the MM Transformer and the higher headroom of the KT88s. That is what my Marshall is, a Pro Mod. (Had the guts totally ripped out of it and converted to the PM!) Now, the Hybor? Transformer in the QR are pretty much the old style Marshall transformers. That combined with the EL34s will give the warm classic Marshall tone. Scott told me that since I had my Marshall modded he had adjusted the mod according to the 3rd gear and other things. So essentially the new PM and QR are going to sound much better than the ones from a year ago.
So Al Estrada is in for a treat when he gets his new QR!

The Splawn site says that both amps have the Heyboer transformer. Is that true or does the site need to be updated. When you say modern what exactly are you describing in terms of tone and sound?

Mercury Magnetics transformers are also wound to classic marshall specs like the Heyboers, the one is no more modern sounding then the other....the Mercury types just happen to cost more money for whatever reason. The difference is mainly in the tube power section- KT-88's make a high gain preamp sound different because they do not break up in the manner of an EL-34. The El-34 will sound warmer and more classic. Which is also why all the hi gain, suck the mids, "chung chung" guys prefer Kt-88's...less squish equals tighter palm mutes for that style of playing. I personally can't stand that crap (as you can tell) and I think most are better off going solid state if the only concern is tight palm muting etc,...
BTW why would Estrada be "happier with a more modern tone" when the tone he is trying to emulate is straight from the 70's?

I was just curious really...as long as it sounds good to my ear, I don't care what's in there..as long as it's quality..which I know it is =0) right now I have 6L6's in my tube amp, so I'm sure the feel's going to be a heck of alot different between the two...
