Hi all I'm new here. Here's the thing. I love the Marshall sound but not any Marshalls I have played except a JCM800. I had a JCM900 and that was boring to say the least. I now have a Rivera Knucklehad that I love sometimes but hate most of the time. The Splawns sound great and get nothing but good reviews but does anyone think they will be suited for someone who doesn't play 80's rock? I am not a VH fan and don't want to sound like him, or Lynch or anyone else I see mentioned. I appreciate good tone though and some of my favs on record have been Marshalls. My band sounds more like Primus, Chili Peppers, more modern stuff. My playing is more along th Hendrix/Gilmore/Page side. Am I safe to assume that thi s amp will do more than 80's rock as well?

I can see it doing blues and zep but how about some modern tones (I don't mean nu-metal crap)? Maybe a good sustaining Vox sound as well? Some bands I am thinking of are Weezer, Radiohead, Tomahawk, Tool, etc. I don't know if anybody listens to that sort of stuff. thanks

I have owned 3 Splawn amps the Modded Marshall (sold), Pro Mod (available), and the Quick Rod. The one I am keeping is my Quick Rod because it will give me all the 80's metal sounds plus the classic stuff as well, I just prefer the EL34 growl! From what you have said about your sound, the Pro Mod is probably your best bet because it is smoother and more open and modern sounding. The PM will do the classic's as well it just has a slightly different feel than the QR. You should contact Scott he will tell you straight up if the amp will suit your needs.

My buddy Johnny from Physical Graffitti is ordering a Splawn. Hes the "Jimmy Page" in the Zep tribute. They tour all over the country and are based here in Florida. He likes the QR better than his vintage Marshalls for Zeppelin. I plugged him into mine in the low input and he was in heaven. Check out the clip from Zack from Contagious,, total Hendrix, SRV sounding playing through a Pro-mod and a strat. His clips is awesome. Stay far, far away from my clips,, LMAO. I'm about as 80's as it gets.

Craig, I am with you on the 80s thing man! LOL I have a question about the Quick Rod. Does it have more of a bite to it than the Pro Mod. My Splawn Modded Marshall (pretty much a Pro Mod!) sounds great, I feel like it needs more of a bite to it. Thought about just have the transformer swapped and EL34s added. Or I might sell the Marshall and order a brand new Quick Rod! I made my mind up after hearing your soundclips Craig.

Of course I might have to correct myself and say that when I get my Mansel Guitar it will probably change everything. After all, I am playing with a Wolfgang Special!

When I emailed Scott he suggested the Pro Mod as well but it seems to me that everyone raves more about the QR. I have always been a fan of the EL34 growl as well so I don't know! And I've also heard the clean is a bit better on the QR also? I don't know, I wish I could hear both in person but i will be lucky to hear just the QR if the dealer here gets one in. I actually listened to the Fair Warning album today because I had my Stepdad's van and the CD was in there since he is all about the 80's as well. The first track definitely has a killer guitar sound which is basically what I am looking for w/ maybe a bit more gain. What to do?!

Yeah the growl is definitely a fitting description of what I am looking for. Kind of like taking a classic Marshall sound and adding more attitude and meat to it making it modern with a classic feel if that makes sense.

I'm looking for pretty much the same thing you are DD..and I think with the addition of the third gear mod, it'll be more than modern enough...
man, when eddie hits the G at the beginning of Mean Street...that's the SH*T!!! =D alotta more 'modern' sounding amps don't have that type of growl...
