This thread has been incredibly helpful. I went back and picked up a Little Alligator volume pedal, put it through the loop, dialed in the tone I wanted, and voila! That's what I'm talkin 'bout Willis.

this is probably the earliest i came across the effects loop trick...1992...the other guy, playing through the peavey, used to crank that thing and control the volume with the eq that's sitting on top of the amp... also...this guy was a phenomenal player...new all the zeppelin solos note for note...miss that dude...a few months after this pic was taken he bought a 5150 and it sounded incredible back then.

i agree that the volume pedal in the loop takes away some sizzle from the amp's inherent tone but sometimes it's better than not being able to turn up the amp at smaller shows. plus it's great for playing at home.

Sure thing Jaymes, that's it. This fellow seems to sell the same thing with different listing names.
I was using an Ernie Ball Jr but was not crazy about it, tough to quickly and accurately manipulate for me... saw this for 20 bucks, tough to go wrong and saved me wiring it up myself anyway.

Should this maybe be stickied? It comes up so often. Every n00b should know the joys of effects loop attenuation! Better bedroom tone for the common man.

I have used an Ernie Ball passive 250K volume pedal and currently use a Tube Amp Volume Control Box i got on Ebay for 20 bucks, both work great for this... Havoc, you've made me curious Can you go into a little more detail and compare both of these and you're thoughts? I've used the volume pedal with good results, but just wondering if you like the Omnisonic better and why. Thanks.

andyk,
Great sound & playing! How do the other effects sound on the Nanoverb & what are your settings on the verb? I am still trying to decide on what to put thru the loop - multi-effects unit or volume pedal/box w/ separate pedals? Nanoverb @ $100 bucks is tempting.

The Nanoverb is old, and only 16bit, but the reverbs are nice. The delay is limited, chorus is decent. I don't bother with the rest of the FX. Just a hint of reverb, and I use it as another master volume. So the input is set till the light glows green, the mix is set way low (9:00), and the output is set at about 12:00.
