K, so i just ordered a comp today, SO STOKED! The problem is that I've been playing for 12 years but only through combo amps. I was hoping that someone could help me to figure out what cab to get. I love classic rock, VH, Zep, all that good stuff. I know avatar has good prices but need a little guidance. I want to get a 2X12 cab and was thinking of getting greenbacks but I'm not too sure. Help!

Take a ride on the Reading Railroad, go directly to Boardwalk. Do not F around with any other cab, Avatar, whatever. You'll just end up wondering what it would be like had you gone Splawn in the first place. Don't scrimp, just do yourself a favor and get the Splawn 2x12 Standard Cab. Put some Big Blocks, Greens, Small Blocks, whatever, you can't go wrong. I have the 2x12 w/BBs and it sounds big and keeps up with everything it's run up against so far. I'm a hack with a marginal ear and even I can hear a difference.

Mr Ball,
Don't pay too much attention to Matt, he likes to cost people money (he raised the price of the Competition to $1,500 from $1,250 with a phonecall) and has a vicodin habit.
I have the Avatar 2x12 open back and, well, it's six bits of plywood to hold your speakers, like most cabs.
I was like you - all combos before I got my Competition (last one before Matt's price hike - phew) and never had to buy a speaker before, and the way I chose speakers is the way I'm suggesting you do it. I listened to/watched all the demos and chose the speakers used in the demos with the tones I liked most. Those turned out to be the old classic Splawn match up of one Governor and one Man-o-war. Now I'm not saying these will be the last speakers I buy - I'm getting interested in Greenies and Small Blocks lately - but it made a hell of a starting point for getting me the sound I was expecting/hoping for with my Splawn. So hit all the demos, and see whose tone says "yes" to you, and look at those speakers.
FWIW, IMO, YMMV, LOL, etc.

Except the Vicodin part. And the raising the price part. ;D Is the Comp really $1500 now? (goes to check the Splawn page). More Lies! It's only $1499. It's still a bargain, I need to call up Scott again. Yeah, the Avatar will work fine. I had one for awhile before I truly embraced the dark side. I had V30s and G12H30s in mine so that's probably why the 2x12 with BBs sounded better (to me).

thanks for trying to help a newbie guys. i'll have to check out those eminence speakers. the reason i wanted to go w/ celestion is cause evidently they're cheaper when you order the cabs from avatar. recently i replaced the stock speaker in my marshall combo w/ a vin-30 and it sounds a little better. i don't think i want just those in the cab that i'm going to buy. what do you think of the g12h30 and v-30 combo that avatar offers? or loading the cab w/ two g12h30's? thanks again 4 the help

2G12H's would be killer I think. Just remember to break em in real good before you decide they are too bright. They have a killer midrange character and the bite calms down to near perfect levels after some hours of abuse! Just my opinion....BTW....I've heard a few guys on here make them sound good, but V30's suck ass!

Yeah, another vote for the G12H's. I run my Comp through a Marshall 1982 4x12 with G12H's and it sounds great - fat and crunchy with a lovely low end growl.

Just thought I'd let you all know. I spoke with Scott Splawn on the phone yesterday with a technical question. During our conversation I reiterated that he doesn't charge enough.

Head.
In.
Hands.
ANYWAY, Mr Ball, note that Avatar sells its unloaded cabs direct on eBay for pennies. Then you can be free to buy whatever speakers you like, rather than those that happen to be cheap with the cab. I did it that way. Empty cab from Avatar on eBay, then got my Emis from Musician's Enemy.

If you're getting a cab from avatar only go for the vintage oversized cab, the standards sucks, I know I have one. I didn't try the vintage cab but i've heared it sounds better.

LOL! You kill me, bro. I will say this, Dave at Avatar is a great guy to work with. He delivered my cab in about 3 days, he's one state over mind you, but still. They make a nice product at a nice price. In other news my friend Ayton, I demo'd my Competition for a guy here locally. He really liked your Comp delivery, unwrapping and playing video which lead him to checking out a Comp.

I recently joined the comp club and I have 2 2x12, one with small block 65's, and one with small block 25's. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either one. I had the scrill I'd score one with small block 75's too. If you want to go with a splawn cab, give Scott a call and see what he recomends. I've never heard of him leading someone astray.
