troublehead- the problem with avatars is that they build their cabs from thin plywood, they say it's 13 layers but just by looking at it and the splawn 2x12 you can see the splawn is thicker on the outer shell. Are the newer cabs made from thicker plywood? Ohh and matt, are you color blind? It's blue man . Cool rig you have there, are the kids plugged in the loop or in front of the amp? I agree with this regarding the Avatar "Standard" cabs (I had one and quickly sold it). They are built in house at Avatar. The new Vintage and Contemporary Avatar cabs are built by a second party and are much thicker and beefier sounding. Like I said, I A/B'd the Vintage Avatar with my Splawn (normal sized 2x12) and preferred the Avatar. This was with an Engl Blackmore and VHT 100/CL. But I do want a new Splawn oversized soon !

troublehead what was the tonal difference between the vintage avatar and the splawn? And with what speakers? Did you also compare it to a bogner oversized 2x12? You said it's up there with the bogners in quality, so why would you want the splawn oversized if it's about the same quality as bogners as well?

You said it's up there with the bogners in quality, so why would you want the splawn oversized if it's about the same quality as bogners as well? Keep in mind my Splawn was the smaller standard 2x12, not the oversized. I only want the Splawn oversized 2x12 for cosmetic/matching reasons (for my incoming Competition). I used various speakers in the Splawn cab (Weber 1265's, Emi.Swamp Thangs, Emi.GB12's, Greenbacks, and g12h30's). In the Avatar, I have used Hellatone 30's (g12h30) and now Warehouse Classic Leads (which I love). So basically, it wasn't an A/B test with same speakers per se. However, the Avatar cab just had a fuller and darker vibe. The Splawn was definately tighter, but my VHT was already plenty tight. It just seemed like the Avatar added a "wetness" to the sound. Its hard to explain. I have never played a Bogner, but I have seen one in person and the external build quality appeared very similar. Somewhere over on HC there are pics (inside and out) comparing the Avatar Vintage to the Bogner. The general consensus was the Bogner has a braced rear panel while the Avatar doesn't. If I remember correctly, the poster said the cabs were pretty much identical tonally. But I agree totally about the original Avatar standard cabs. I had one with Emi. Wizards and it was poorly constructed and sounded very boxy.

Thanks troublehead, i'm very tempted to try get the avatar vintage cab now, when will you be getting your splawn oversized? Maybe i'll wait till you get one and see how it compares to the avatar. BTW I was thinking of getting those Warehouse Classic Leads, but now I see they raised the price from 25$ to 45$, may be still worth it.

Hey man OUR cabs sucks . Don't you notice the lack of bottom end with the avatar? You know, I really don't! I'm starting to think it may be this house, with the wood floors and just the way it's built, it's like living in a drum. Everything resonates like mad. I find myself trying to dial bottom end out of things, even my old combo. But then it's also my taste; my idea of the perfect guitar tone isn't one with much bass. And I must admit to being suspicious about how much one man's plywood box alters the sound compared to another's. There, I said it!

And I must admit to being suspicious about how much one man's plywood box alters the sound compared to another's. There, I said it! Yeah, I know. I won't argue. I bought mine for selfish reasons... it looks cool, and the 4x12 was just too much for my situation. I'm a spoiled beech.

Well if it's not the same plywood then it won't be the same sound. As I said the avatar standard cabs have thinner plywood. There are also other things in cabs that affects sound, besides building materials and dimensions, i'm not sure what cause i'm not a sound engineer, but otherwise boogie cab wouldn't be so dark compared to others, for example.

Man, 2nd Gear is just so HUGE. Playing it now. Been playing it the last hour. My guitar sounds MASSIVE. Each gear has its merits, but 2nd must surely be the BIGGEST.
50 watt, OD2, bass 9 o'clock, mids 10.30, treble 11, gain 2. Barely a splash of presence (8 o'clockish). Hot damn.
