I gotta say Vom, I really hate cover bands because despite what craig and shredder think, I hate pop music! I really just can't stomach the music (no offense to you guys, just my tastes). I hate pop music too, and would never dream of playing pop covers anymore even though I have in the past. But, don't think your taking the musical high-ground by doing originals exclusively, cause unless you get that big break you'll find yourself in your mid-30's with $2.00 in your pocket wondering what happened with your musical career. My advice to any musician who is serious, is get out and play ANYTHING, make some cash and do it for a living. You have PLENTY of time to do originals on the side and in-between paying gigs. Plenty of time. I've managed to do both for 15 years, now I own a beautiful house, nice cars, swimming pool and have no money worries because of cover bands and teaching guitar lessons paying my bills all those years. Think about it. Believe me I am not preaching on a pedestal here. I have nothing against those who want to play covers. I do however take some pride in the fact that alot of guitarists can't write their own songs or write anything worth listening to and I was blessed (at least I think) with the gift of creativity. As for my intentions, well I'm 27 and certainly not past my prime but at the end of the "I might make it" attitude and age. I have a full time career and though it doesn't pay well it is a solid thing. The funny thing is I had given up trying to be a rock star when I was younger and went back to school at 21 because I couldn't even get a decent band together. Sure enough, as soon i started towards my BS degree I got a band together! I juggled the band while in school the whole time and now I juggle it with work. Keep in mind that we all have full time jobs and don't play out much these days because of it. That's why I am trying to get more quality gigs rather than quantity. We just don't have the time to gig 5 nights a week, or the energy. On the other hand...if something promising did arise then...by-bye job..I'd leave to go on tour in a heartbeat. I'm not married and my job pays me like schisse anyway so I don't have much to lose. It is a hassle doing all this work and not making any money but I obviously LIVE for it so I don't mind. You'll never see me in a pop cover band because that's just not why i play. Maybe when I get old I'll play in a surf or blues band but no top 40 stuff, just can't do it.

The 80's band I listen to aren't that embarrassing: Talking heads, Joy Division, SRV, GNR, Television, XTC, Bowie, Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc. I guess Maiden and Anthrax are my guilty pleasures!

I can post a few tunes from it if anyone gives a dang...I was using a JCM800 and Roland JC120 for cleans...we actually had a pro video that ran on MTV for a few rounds in late 85'....

The video is called 'Cancellations' I only have the cassette tape of the live gig, but I may have a VHS of the video somewhere...it was done right before the drummer (my buddy) and I joined the band...(a real story there...) so only the bass player and keys are in it with a few pro actors...VERY well done cost a ton o' money...as good as anything you'll see on MTV..
