Shawnee,
It was weird at first for me also. And I had some doubts at first for sure since I played better on my modeler. I think it must be different for everyone. Probably the players who've played a long time, on many different rigs, and have some considerable chops just fall right into the Splawn - it gives that articulation and tone that they've been looking for without a bunch of fussing with pedals and knobs, but at the same time their skills allow them to deal. On the other hand, guys like me coming from a modeler or something with built in effects - with average skills - have to step up and deal with an amp that demands to be played and without hiding behind the built-in compressions, delays, etc. It was/is definitely a transition for me. But, I stuck it out and glad I did. The tone is awesome and I'm improving as a player.

The first time I turned on my splawn I was seriously unhappy with the tone I was getting, i was using a 4x12 Cab Loaded with Eminence Governors and Eminence Private Jacks in an X Pattern, with stock valves, biased cold and a fender ash strat with scatterwound pickups.. this combination did NOT!!! work.
I now have a 2x12 Vintage 30 loaded cab with beam blockers, changed the pre-amp valves to Sovteks, Biased the amp at 70% Diassapation and use an Ibanez RG with DiMarzio Super Distortion and Air Norton.. and this combination absolutely rocks my socks off, best freaking rock tone i've ever heard.
took me a lot of trial and error to get the splawn sound i'd heard on clips and in my head.. but it was achievable and im glad I took the time.

Thanks for this post, this is a great idea - the beam blockers. I have a Mesa Recto 2x12 that is a little to bright with Vintage 30s in it for my Pro Mod but I had completely forgotten the Weber Beam Blockers as an option. I really like running this amp with Greenback but don't want to haul a 4x12 everywhere I go. Thanks for the recommendation.
