My #1 guitar, '94 LP Studio just died!
Hey all.
I have had this guitar for 11 years with no real problems and last night I put the guitar on the stand during a break in practice and when I came back in the garage the nut was broken and the head sparated from the neck!
At first I thought I broke a string but then I noticed the strings were in the wrong slot on the nut and that was all chipped. No big deal...until I noticed the headstock had cracked off and is held on only by the wood on the front of the head (black part).!
Here's the weird part: I never dropped it and the only people in the room were my bandmates (bass & drummer) and they left when I did. We were just having a smoke outside and it was broke when I came back. I thnk they would have told me if they dropped it and I would have heard it. It looks like the strings pulled the head stock off the neck. WTF?!
Can this be fixed and how? Do I need a new neck? What can be done since it is a neck through body. Has this ever randomly happened to anybody? I am so pissed. This has been my fav guitar and it could have happened to any other one and I wouldn't have cared. My woman is taking it to my guitar tech today while I'm at work. Ughhhh.

Not to worry.....the most common of all fix it's to a les paul is reattaching the headstock. I know it's a shock but very common..

Just make sure you do some checking and it's a reputable Luthier who has done this kind of work before. Get online and do some checking. It'll be worth sending the guitar off for repair. bummer dude! I feel for ya!

I have a luthier that is great and I sent the guitar off to him today. He says he does about 3 or 4 of these a week! He used to build EVH's guitars at the Kramer factory so I trust him;). I am having him replace the nut as well. Any suggestions? I mentioned graphite but he hinted against it.

Did he say it was poor glue at the joint? just curious!
Hmm what is his recommendation for a Nut? bone?

Aren't LP necks and heads all one piece from the head to the body end? He recommended bone or composite matierial but said I would be best with the composite.

Ya most are single mohogany, there are some that are three piece construction.. doubt yours is on of them .. anywho.. still a major bummer! but good news is, I have seen some excellent repairs often making the guitar play better afterwards. was it a clean break? just wonderin, do you do those neck dives by grabbin the head stock??? I used to!

Broken #1. That definitely sucks. Well, at least your luthier sounds like he's got lots of experience with this kind of thing. That's good. Any idea when you'll get her back?
Boy, the lengths you'll go to, to get that sticky nut replaced. LOL!

Well I got it back and while it plays better (because if the new nut) it looks like hell. REALLY dissapointed:( My #1 now looks like a big POS. The break is very visible and catches my eye whenever I look at my hands (which is most of the time).
I always trust this guy to do great work but it really looks like he slapped it together and didn't clean up the glue well. Can this still be cosmetically saved? I am thinking if I have to have the whole neck refinished then so be it.
I never did the dive bomb thing with the head stock and I always took great care of this guitar. UGHHHhhhhhh this sux.

Damm Gibson quality. WOW,, that is a horror story. Honestly for what a studio is worth its probably not worth it to have it refinished, but if you want it like new cosmetically send it to laysguitar.comThey've been working on my stuff since I was 18.. top quality and authorized Gibson restorers/repair.

I'll check it out. Thanks. I know the guitar wasn't worth all that much to begin with and now is not worth anything. Its the sentimentality that is value as it has been my fav guitar since day one. I would just like it to not look like a train hit it!
