If were talking Ozzy tone,, The Ultimate Sin was the best hands down. The Randy rhoads stuff sounded like it was recorded in a liquor store with a RAT pedal.. but the playing was great.

"I stand alone today." I like my Rat pedal. Liquor stores I could take or leave.

Well I guess i'll chime in with my own since I don't know most of these 80's wankers you guys mention. ;D
Best live tones I have heard?
Robin Trower (this summer). Two Marshalls, a JCM800 and a Plexi I believe. Sig Strat and some Fulltone pedals. AMAZING. The fattest, thickest, meanest strat sound I have ever heard.
EJ had great tone when I saw him also withthe exception of his gnarly, muddy fuzz tone.
Cake. Not only are these guys super-tight sounding and have the best live overall sound like you were just hearing an album but their guitar player gets some awesome Fender tones.
Favorite album tones?
Refused - The Shape of Punk To Come. None of yu may know them but the guitar and overall production is killer on that album, not to mention the songs as well. It was their last album before they broke up so they decided to be experimental instead of the usual hardcore punk they did before.
Weezer. Yep I think there are some great Marshall tones on the earlier records.
SRV - The Sky is Crying. I just listened to this today and I love the blues tones on that album.
Green Day. I can't really stand them but I agree with TJ. They (or their producer) know how to get a kick ass guitar sound on record.
Tool - 10,000 Days. I was always a fan but hated his guitar tones on record. Oddly enough I like thier newest album the least but he finally got the guitar sounds right. He used a few amps but it was mostly Diezel VH4 and the new Rivera KTRE. They really brought the guitar up in the mix for once and it sounds bad*ss.

LOL , what are you kidding, especially with that acoustic guitar strung with two strings is it? Not the lead singer. Coincidentally, in the context of the whole band, those small sh!tty acoustics he uses fit perfectly in the overall sound live and in the studio. Its actually quite genius. I guess you have never seen them live then. The lead guitarist has a great slightly dirty sound and chops to boot. Believe it!
