Kurt Cobain: Yuk yuk yuk!! Created the downfall of guitar playing.
Smashing pumpkins: First album was decent. Guitar playing is horrible but catchy tunes.
Stevie Ray Vaughn: What are you talking about? He was rocking during the hair days.

BAM! END OF DISCUSSION!

OK, I think alot of you are missing the point here. We are not just talking about the ability to play guitar though we are all biased because we are guitarists and you you know what critics we can be . I think what we're getting at here is that the 80's was a period of extreme excess. Hair, clothes, make-up, colors, and yes..music. More is better was the attitude then and it showed in the music. This blind excess lead to music that was ..well..cheesy! There was just too much cheese oozing out of the 80's bands and even the older guys who were around before that fell victim (Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc). Yes, the musicianship was there and we as guitarists appreciate that, but set that aside and it just comes down to silly, chessy music. Grunge and alternative was a return to artful songwriting with substance other than chicks and partying. You guys who grew up with that will of course defend it and this is just mine (and jimbax's) perspective, as well us representing those who oppose that type of stuff. Outside of your circle of friends and age group, there are not really any people who like that stuff and find it silly and childish. I'm sorry to say guys but that period of music will not hold up over time. Younger generations (in general) do not like any of that stuff other than as a funny novelty. Yet I know kids (15-18 yr old) that love Hendrix, Floyd, Zep, Cream, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. and for that I say Amen! end of rant..flame away:)

Stevie Ray Vaughn: What are you talking about? He was rocking during the hair days. Kurt Cobain was 'sincere' that's why he spoke with more weight and depth than any cheesy 'pre-fab' big hair band trying to 'replicate' a trendy tune...not just the 'grunge' guys but anyone that plays from their heart and pours their soul into their music...this is what 'moves' me... a bunch of jack@ss jokers with dolly parton hairdoos singin some cheese tune about 'cherry pie' with comic book antics...I hated that and still can't stand all that crap...
