you know, I'm a bit older than most of you guys (if not all...) I have a different approach to the guitar...more 'old school' I admit I play lots of pentatonic and simple blues scale runs, hardly ever do I bust out into the sweep arps and diminished stuff...here's my 'Old School' top 5 albums...maybe you agree...maybe not....
1) Black Sabbath (1st album)...more pentatonic goodness than most anything else out there...most metal guys point to this album as a huge influence.
2) Montrose (1st album)...Ronnie adds some blues notes in there as well as an awesome command of the guitar.
3) Allman Bros Live At Fillmore (with Duanne) major Plexi throwdown...though I heard that Duanne prefered Marshall 'model 1986' 50 watt bass heads...
4) Deep Purple Machine Head....Richie brings more plexi goodness through his Marshall modded 200 watt major heads..
5) Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced (no explanation needed..)
there are tons more but these are my top 5

Ahhhh,, Jimbax your thinking about it too much. Pentatonic and blues stuff is new school man... diminshed arpeggios and diatonic stuff is the REAL old school brother. About 400 years old school. Why pigeon-hole yourself into one limited thing? Old School top 5... 1) Django Reinhart - Anything and Everything. 2) John Williams - Plays Bach 3) Grant Green - anything especially with Lee Morgan 4) Freddie King - makes Hendrix look like a punk 5) John McLaughlin - Biitches Brew or any Miles Davis/Mahavishu stuff. He Invented all those neat Eric Johnson pentatonic licks.
