So far I've only heard the odyssey, but I love that opening riff on Inferno...it's sooo freakin cool. As far as how I got turned on to Splawns....it's kind of a long story. But the short version is that I accidentally stumbled onto Scott's site.....and then realized that I had stumbled onto "something wonderful". ;D so you were lookin' up porn and mistyped something?? HAH..just kidding =D glad to have ya hear =) did you listen to the clips? I saw symph x live...great band...divine wings of tragedy's a good album as well! You, my dear man, are amazing!!!!! As a matter of fact, I WAS looking up porn! I typed S&M into the ol' search engine and I got "Splawn and Marshall"! And I thought.....What tha' Fu.....that's not what I'm lookin for. I KIIIIID...I KIIIID...as in Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. OK. The truth is not that interesting, but it is kinda funny. I'll try to keep this short. In my 25 years of playing hard rock guitar, I have never owned nor have I desired to own a Marshall JCM 800. I always assumed (and you know what happens when I assume) that it did not have enough gain for me. Well, I was recently playing through one of those inexpensive (aka: cheap) Vox modeling combos when I made a startling discovery. (By now, I'm sure you know whats coming.) Yes indeed...I started jamming on that 800 model and could not believe how good it was sounding. I was amazed. Have i actually been depriving myself of this for all these years?!?! I'm afraid the answer is YES! Anyway, to make a long story even longer, I really wanted to find an amp that would do the 800 thing and also have a little extra gain on tap if needed. I did some poking around on the internet for marshall mods and found Splawn. And the rest, as they say, is history.

FOR ME TO POOP ON!!! lol.. seriously though, good deal =0) I've always like the marshall drive and crunch..that I heard on recordings over the years! to be quite honest, I've never plugged into a marshall that sounded much better than just ok...especially considering the price.. then I run into this punk, dirrtycraig over on the seymour duncan boards and he's talkin' about this thing called 'splawn'..at first I thought he was misspelling the comic book character....hah....just kidding...well, about the comic book part...tee hee.... but I heard his clips, then came here and heard more clips....and eventually I was able to pick one up...I bought it sight unseen..normally a recipe for disaster..but I took a leap of faith and I couldn't be happier..hands down, the best friggin' amp I've ever heard or played through or had the privelege to own....

Thats funny, thats how I discovered Splawn too. I was finally ina postition to buy anything I wanted and kept thinking of the best sounding amp I ever played which was a JCM800 a buddy owned years ago,, so I'm looking for hot-rodded Marshalls, Soldanos whatever,, and came across Splawn. I couldnt be happier and just purchased my second Splawn head,,

the Same here, had all kinds of amps.. I would not buy one unless I could play it.. this was my 2nd amp I bought without hearing it first, I couldnt be happier as well. I dont use my other amps at all anymore. like the others here, I find myself going dry signal more and more, just had to get used to it! OK I just came out of the 80's LOL

"for me to poop on..." now that's funny!!! LMAO
BTW, I did check out alot of the clips, but not all. I'm sure I listened to your's, Craig's, Scott's and Al's. I'm a sucker for that old VH sound... I loved his tone as much as I loved his playing. You guys' clips pretty much sealed the deal for me. Thanks for letting Scott post that stuff. Being able to listen to those makes the decision to buy alot easier.
And yes Craig, I'm aware that you have another on the way....You bastage you! LOL As if I weren't envious enough already.......Splawn, Mansel Tiger, Professional guitarist (playing music that you actually like, no less). You've got it goin on dude. Yes, I am envious, but I'm also happy for you. Rock on.

I haven't posted because the 'neo-classical' thing isn't my favorite music....Uli Jon Roth was bringin' some of that stuff in the late 70s and I thought his work on the Scorpions 'Taken By Force' (my favorite Scorps album BTW...check out 'Sails Of Charon', He's a Woman She's a Man, and 'We'll Burn The Sky') was great...I never could incorporate those things in my playing...because I don't 'feel' them...I like what Blackmore does with mixing blues guitar with only touches of classical (like 'Burn')...I think these neo guys are amazing players but they come off as spending WAY too many notes on EVERYTHING they play...that lessens the impact of their solos...is this Romeo guy's guitar partially scalloped neck? he barely picks his arpeggios he maybe touches the strings...I am not moved by this kind of playing....David Gilmour playing a thousand less notes means more to me...definitely a 'subjective' opinion.

Ok guys this thread is creepin' a bit, and Matt please, I told you i'm not an object ok i'm a real person with feelings dude,, LMFAO... bwwahahaha.
Hey you know I totally forgot to mentio I just saw Symphony X a few months ago. They were awesome. I still haven't gotten around to getting a cd yet, I plan on it.
We saw them in Tampa on the Gigantatour. All these NU Metal wusses were playing first and then this band comes on on the outdoor stage and this singer is just killing and I hear all this killer guitar stuff, they were awesome. Of course i went to see Dream Theater and Nevermore and got a bonus with S-X.
Megadeth was horrible.. at one time one of my favorite bands when Marty was in it. The guys he had now were awful all of them. Totally sub-par guitar player. I want that gig!

I just discovered something that I find very interesting. Bear with me here. Your favorite Scorps album was released in 1977, while my favorite Scorps (Blackout) was released in 1982. There's a five year span between those two albums, which happens to be the difference in our age. Yes, I'm afraid that age difference was enough to put me past the Roth era Scorps and I never have backtracked to check out any of that stuff....probably to my detriment. If I can remember to, I'll check into "Taken by Force", you know...see if it speaks to me. Regarding Romeo, I understand where you're comin' from and why you don't care for him. I would like to point out that it was his playing that got my attention, but the songs that kept me listening. If I don't like the songs, I ain't stickin' around for the guitar playin'. I have that problem with just about all of Steve Via's stuff. I've said it (typed it) before, and it bears repeating: First, gimme a good song, then give me great (or even good) guitar playing. Also, Gilmour is fantastic. I've always described his playing as "Extremely Tasty". That guy ALWAYS knows EXACTLY what to play.

I don't even know who's in Megadeth anymore! They should probably just call it the Dave Mustaine Band! I haven't seen 'em lately, but I agree with you about Marty. My favorite was "Countdown". That album might would make my top ten of all time...not sure. BTW...You might NOT want that gig. I get the destinct impression that "You Know Who" is a real deek head. Just from interviews I've seen. However....I could be wrong.

Yeah Countdown is definitely in my top 10 all-time greatest guitar records too, and the songs were fantastic. Marty just exploded off that record with so much feel and amazing stuff all over the place.

Also, Gilmour is fantastic. I've always described his playing as "Extremely Tasty". That guy ALWAYS knows EXACTLY what to play. I just have a different approach to the guitar than most of the guys here.... I always hated/resented the 'competitive' guitar playing chops oriented thing...some would say this is an excuse to have sub-par ability but that isn't my case... It was never really said about our band in the 70/80s "Oh, you have to go see 'ArchRival' they have this smokin' guitar player".... I was never in that category nor did I try to be....I think there is a bit of this 'Michael Jordan' approach to the guitar that I am not attracted to...that's me.. If that is what you guys like, that is fine...I won't judge you (to your face anyway....hehehe) No, really, go for it if that is what you like.... I just never really had this romantic idea of me playing these mondo-ridiculous-over-the-top-chops in the spotlight so people can rave over what a big shot I am.... Not why I play...not my personality..
