hahah ya.. gotta think 20 years ago.. what would / did we do??.. haha new camera.. cheezy mic,, get it on tape.. I have one of those 1979 or so tapes, its terrible sounding. looks just about as bad last time I watch it.
Jam on George! Sure looked like it was a jam for the cam and a small personal audiance.. even at the end he was humbly stating it kinda sucked with the hand waver..
Fun to watch.

I gotta say, its not the best representation of George but I still dug it. I remember seeing that video in high-school, I think around '85-'86 cause he used to take hat drum machine and studio rig on the road to write tunes. He wrote Mr Scary on the '85-'86 tour, so thats probably where thats from.. The tone is pretty bad without a doubt.
Also in defense of Mr Lynch,, he really crosed the threshold from a good player like in this video to amzing around '87-'88. He got ALOT better after that. Thats one of the things I always loved about the guy is how he let himself grow and get better.
Anyway, for the best Lynch video, get the Dokken Live in Japan DVD '95.. its like $14 and is the best Lynch I've ever heard . And he tone kills on it.

Man, I know I come off as self-righteous...I don't mean to...I love George...but in this video his sound is horrible...I guarantee George wouldn't like it either, that's my point there...(I don't know what he was thinking with all that over processing going on) he has a few 'signature' licks that he did when I knew him and still did them there...the 'descending pentatonic' lick on the 1,2 and 3 strings finishing with a quick little 'slide' in and out of the 'blues' note on the G string...that is VERY familiar with George...he plays it about 4 or 5 times here...( I play a variation of it too, we BOTH (and others) got it from Schenker...) the openning riff F#5 (to B5) w/hammer-on/off to sharp 5 etc...we were all doing that stuff...my biggest point is that you get lazy and sloppy as a player when you have all that processing on your sound...and George is playing sloppy here.. (and there is no way that 'bathroom' reverb and slap echo is from the 'room' or from the camara mic.. that is cheesy digital processing...) it makes it alot easier to play those difficult passages...(it covers a multitude of 'sins'...) Try it yourself...go get a distortion box and crank it into an alredy gained out Splawn...kill it with a TON of reverb and echo and then start jamming...Now, isn't it much easier to play super hero licks!.. my guess is a Marshall gained out with some distortion box (not amp distortion) and then added reverb and slap echo...I've seen him and heard him play and sound much better... sorry...And shreder, I've never heard God jam, but, I'm sure he uses a Splawn amp!

I kind of agree with jim here. My favorite Dokken stuff is off tooth and nail and that was some time back. I seen george a few years ago in a local club and he was pretty bad. He was just playing a million notes and nothing was tasty. What I have seen of george live has been pretty inconsistent. Some shows he played great others he sucked. Who cares anyway? He had his moments and certainly was a big influence on many players in his time period. Cool video... Never seen that one. Anyone interested in some Dokken boots I have a few...

I have always thought that George was one of the most over rated players ever (although he's obviously better than I am). He's good, but he's not technically great like YJM, EV, Gilbert, ect. I do think he's a great rock song writer and his solos ARE cool, but he's just not a technical monster. The local guitar heros around here can play circles around him and no one has ever even heard of them. Seems like a very cool guy and I love his music so that's all that really matters anyway.

Shawnee, check out the Dokken Live in Japan '95 video, then retract that statement. Hes a monster and has tons of chops, feel and a unique style that your not goin to see from your local yocals.
