I never said he existed in the LA scene. I know he wasn't in LA playing at that time. Which is why (if you re-read the post) I put "a guy from AUSTIN named Eric Johnson" FYI I'm 36 and I'm not a twerp who thinks he's all that. I agree with you on certain aspects of your rant. The young guns 9 times out of 10 have no clue what they're talking about. That shouldn't lead you to assume that we're all 20 yr old twerps that know nothing of what we speak. These are just people's opinions man. You're not going to change those. Why are you getting so upset over someone's opinion on RR and Jake E. Lee. Relax! I didn't mean any of the rant to be aimed at you.... I don't know you....I just have issues and needed to get them out! NOW...where am I?...... No prob man. Everyone has those types of days. ;D

Ok...Ok...I'll come clean....splawnfan pays me $200 a week to run smack and stir things up on the boards here...he said it was getting too boring...I don't even play guitar, my real name is Chester Buckerucker...I don't even know who George Lynch is? made it all up....splawnfan said he would give me a $100 Christmas bonus if I could maybe stir up the 20 something crowd...get them in here...he said, positive or negative 'however you gotta do it'....so, ITS HIS FAULT!

I MUST hear about the ozzy audition Here's the Ozzy story: A friend of mine back then was asked for a list of guitar players he thought should audition (by Ozzy's people..)...my name was on his list...he said he will set up a time and I should go there and just see what happens...(I think it was in Burbank or thereabouts...) I was in a band with friends at the time, I thought we had a good shot at getting signed...I LOVED Black Sabbath though... by far my favorite band growing up! I thought, hmmm, I'll go there and bust out some Sabbath riffs and go home...(I thought Ozzy was going to pick up where Sabbath left off...) well, he set up a time, but I didn't go! actually I got distracted and forgot about it...I wouldn't have got the gig I'M SURE OF IT! I don't have any regrets, I can't hang with Randy or a few other LA guns that were on the list that, frankly, had more 'game' than I did at the time...but??? about 2 weeks later the rumour was that Ozzy asked Randy to quit Quiet Riot and he was mulling it over....I thought: Randy plays bubble gum power pop/rock how the heck is that going to work??? I also knew that Randy was a chops/guitar theory wiz so I was curious as to what 'chemistry' would win out...the rest, as they say, is history....

I know who we're talkin' about...lol.... I just don't see it...ok, maybe back then you're a kid or a guy on the scene and you see this guy playhing and whatnot and he sounds great...FOR THAT TIME..I'm going by looking at things on a larger scale.....and rather unbiased adn whatnot I'd like to think =) dude, martini's friggin' phenomonal... and I'm going to get this right out there...I think Randy Roads is one of the most overrated guitarists of all time..there, I said it =) maybe if he was given more time to develop, then my mind would change..... i find this statement unbelievable...i'm a huge warren head...but we're talking about RANDY RHOADS I stated in another thread that: Randy Rhoads is the single most impressive guitar player I have ever seen! I have seen them ALL...(including EVH and Dimeola, Holdsworth...you name it) I really can't explain it...I was watching a video of old Quiet Riot at the Starwood in 79' and Randy was having a TERRIBLE night...sloppy, I don't know...BUT, playing with them a few times and just watching him bust out these awesome scale runs in practice, his command of the guitar was second to none, he could go from 0 to shred in a nano second, his 'phrasing' was more than just scale intervals though...he was musically way ahead of all of us then in a very cool way...I haven't heard many others that have that UNIQUE recognizable sound and approach...(though Randy's tone was terrible..) Yngwie, yep...EVH,..yep...

Ok look guys this thread is getting out of hand. I have a great idea,, please everyone, Splawnfan, JimBax, Shreder,,, ok here it is. Please just agree with whatever I say,, ok? Great... LMAO. EVH wrote the book period.. I don't care what anyone says. Randy was hugely influenced by EVH even though he did a little classical. And trust me when I say a LITTLE CLASSICAL. The "Dee" thing is barely Classical.. ok seriously. I'm doing this right now at Steston U, and that ain't classical... And Randy was NO Yngwie who took classical phrasing into Metal.. BUT Randy was really good, fairly clean and had a terrible tone. God love him cause he died too soon,, and I truly believe he would have gotten ALOT better.. DeMartini not as good as Randy? You guys need to get off the crack-pipe and try learning some of those licks. Its not about flash (Jimbaxs rant).. your missing the point completely.. DeMartini was fluid like a horn player and could play circles around Randy. Whether or not Randy was an influence makes no difference.. Randy and 27 and Warren at 27? Warren hands down. Lynch.. Oh yeah sorry he is/was better too. Maybe not until he was in his thirties, but he was. Eric Johnson a blues guy???!!! Good lord, open your ears boy. He was around Austin since long before SRV and was way more John Mclaughlin than John Lee Hooker. Now please, everyone just agree with me. hahahahaahaa.

No, sorry he wasn't. Its a fact. I know you love the guy, but he wasn't ahead of anyone. Maybe in LA he was the sh1t, but Holdsworth, Dimeola, the guys you were mentioning, were light years beyond Randy.

I was a HUGE Holdsworth convert in the early/mid 80s don't get me started on that guy...RR went 'goth' because he thought that is what would work with Ozzy's stuff, not really 'classical' though he did know the harmonic minor theory pretty good for a pop guy...Yngwie was already there with Alcatrazz I think...

I agree, I would imagine in '78-'79 after VH got signed... seeing Randy was pretty unreal for that time period of unacheiving rock players like Nugent and Frampton, Randy was probably amazing to see. Wish I could have been there.

I think the whole harmoinic minor thing was way over-rated and talked about. Its a friggin minor scale with a raised 7th.. its one note! Guys that impressed me with scales were like Marty Friedman and DiMeola who could twist in and out of melodic ideas,, and DeMartini who would substitute the Dom7 over the vi in addition to the standard blues box stuff.. and who knows what Lynch is thinking, that guy has the coolest note choices.
