Hendrix, EVH and all the guitarists before them that inspired them have influenced/inspired ALL of us and changed the way things sound and are played. Evolution in short. All do respect for Hendrix and EVH. You guys wouldn't be as good as you are without them.

Hendrix was amazing. The problem is that a lot of people forget about the era that things happened in. It's not fair to compare him to any guitar playing past his death because he can still influence them, but he wasn't here to see how their playing would have affected his. Name the top ten guitar players before 1970. Hendrix isn't on your list? Liar! Who names Hendrix as one of their main influences? Just about eveyone from SRV to Malmsteen. He was one sick blues player as well. He had his own thing going and didn't sound like anyone else at all. A true pioneer.

donalddemon, not to be a d1ck, but if you really think EVH was a gimmicky guitarist, you have ALOT to learn about music, the guitar, technique and musicianship in general. Of course your opinion on not liking it is fine, but gimmicky is a bad choice of words... and makes you sound kinda ignorant. I'm not a fan of Hendrix, but he wrote great tunes and played some great bluesrock stuff especially for that time period. I own alot of his stuff and like it. Was he overrated? Probably considering John Mclaughlins overlooked playing in the 60's along with guys like Albert King and even Jeff Beck, Phil Keaggy etc, who were playing circles around Hendrix both musically and technically. I don't think I'm too far off base to say that he used a lot of gimmicks in his playing. There doesn't have to be anything wrong with that word "gimmick" either. He used the finger tapping technique and the whammy bar dives and harmonics as a gimmick. Hendrix used playing with his teeth and whammy bar dives as a gimick as well. Page used a bow on his Les Paul as a gimmick and all these worked. IMO EVH overused that stuff where I just think it didn't fit the song alot. I think I have played guitar long enough to knpw what good technique and musicianship is and I am not saying that Eddie didn't have those. I guess its just a matter of style. Keep in mind I am not a big VH fan and I don't know alot of the earlier stuff. It was Van Hagar when I was growing up and I actually like the songs better than with DLR so I know I'll get flamed for it! It all good Craig, its just my opinion. You don't have to attack my credibilty to make a point.
