I agree with you 100%..first and foremost, EVH was a songwriter....sure, he did lots of leads and noises and fill ins, blah blah blah....so? all to service the song....alotta people don't praise him (sorry, best word I could think of..I have a fever..lol) for his rythm work..which is friggin' fantastic.... take panama..the intro...not repeated for the rest of the song...alotta other guitarplayers woulda repeated it over and over again cause it's so cool...but ed didn't..which makes it all the better in the song.... i never really thought about that with panama...but you're right... for me, ed's greatest rhythm chops can be found on beautiful girls...i still get chills listening to that rhythm... that's another great one...just so fluid and comfortable sounding... he was always great at comming up with something that sounded TOTALLY different than the last song, ya know? and he just doesn't get credit for it....well, not as much as he does for his lead work...

dude, you mentioned two of my faves...girl gone bad and house of pain... I think Eddies best playing from a technical and strictly creative guitar standpoint was 1984. Girl Gone Bad, rhythms and solos,, unreal Hot For Teacher, classic. House of Pain, heavies VH ever? Top Jimmy, just weird and totally orginal. Solo on Jump, fantastic. Panama, stompin classic rocker. Drop Dead legs, Alan Holdsworth on crack? Awesome outtro solo and groove.

oh yeah? prove it..when you get your third gear monster, I wanna hear some of those yngwie licks...LOL... I wouldn't say speed is easy (at least not for me) but it's the most overused thing out there most times i have to disagree...any new technique that ed came up with served the song first and foremost...the tapping intro to mean street...the drill on pundcake...the noises on everybody wants some...etc.. that's what seperates him from shredders like vai and satriani...ed wrote great songs I agree 100% Speed is easy. I can play Yngwie and Zakk Wylde licks all day long. Its boring and easy. Play a Lynch or a VH style and now you got some work to do. ..but for the record, I LOVE Yngwie too.

Lynch and EVH are great styles to learn from. There is so much that is there to choose from.
Shredder, Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain a my favs too. I like all the early albums, but the first has to be my all time fav. I might be able to post Im The One in a couple of weeks. Still trying to get the solo's right!

I gotta be careful here...I've been somewhat 'woosie-fied' which means that I've been playing alot of classical and acoustic guitar gigs over the past 10-15 years...(NO SHRED FOR ME! ...15 years) I only recently got back into the 'old school' stuff because the gigs I'm getting are wanting it...(that's why the Splawn amp..) I have tons of old school background but I have to knock the rust off of the 'licks' I used to run...all that to say: it isn't the actual LICKS or even 'styles' as much as APPROACH....how does each of these guys VIEW the fretboard?? what is their attitude? fast picking? trills? legato? arps? combination? I STEAL that and run....try to incorporate them into my OWN style....I would rather SUCK (and I pretty much do admittedly...) trying to develop my OWN STYLE then worship these clowns that don't give any of this a second thought...I like learning a lick and then, instead of just playing it outright, develop my own 'take' and then put it in my bag o' tricks...

Love the bag-0-tricks, I was thinking of writing something about the same lines , For me i try to make it mood dependant. I try picking up as much as I can from other players and using it modified as me. I pay attention to the players that are one with the guitar, Hendrix, EVH, Vai, srv etc... the way they express "themselves". they transfer the mood, or their musical soul into the music. I try to learn this type of expression. get past the licks, and get into the let it flow out into the world mode. I have been working with a few musicians that are amazing, very experienced and talented. trying to get our "own" things down in the studio here. even after others hear it, they say "I hear pink floyd and ?" influence in it. it happens! I am awaiting the next guy to come along and take us to the lext level, Just like EHV, Hendrix Vai all have done for us. something that doesnt make you say, thats another copy, its just getting to be a long wait.
